The Companies only asset is the ship, I assume their liability will be the value of the ship bplus the freight, but the US element is unknown to me.

The company has already filed paperwork to attempt to get out of paying for very much. I think we really need to overhaul our maritime laws. We managed to open a small channel today but it's not very deep. At least it was enough a few things were tugged through it.

What about the company that employed the local river pilots?

The State of Maryland? Or the ship operator? Under Marine Law the owner is responsible for the operator.

Maritime law is complicated and weird. The company that owns the boat is responsible for whomever is piloting it no matter if it is a different pilot I think. Isn't that kind of like some state car insurance rules where the insurance follows the car and not the driver (that is how it is in this state)?

In the incident where Ever Forward ran aground due to both pilot's negligence it was the owner of the ship that agreed to pay the state roughly $700,000 in damages. This is probably not the actual cost of the damage they caused, but it was the best we could get because it would have been too expensive to litigate. That money didn't actually go toward the habitat it destroyed, and there was a political fight which county was going to receive that money to build a new habitat.

I have heard that the Dali's bow is currently stuck on the bottom of the river, but also on top of a gas line and potentially some sort of water supply structure.

Apart from maybe 2 specific locations the Master is always in charge of the ship. Not the Pilot.

There are a lot of pipes and the boat is pinned so it needs to be released, if it is still stuck I would think they will start taking off the cargo.

what i find odd is - apparently shipping coal to other countries is a thing?  it just seems strange that we can't have coal fired base load electrical generation
in the usa, but we ship tons of it elsewhere to be burned.

That's so the U.S. can adhere to all the one-sided "save the planet" environmental treaties, whereas third-world countries can continue to pollute.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

As far as I can tell we have exported coal for decades and it is a big business for states where the coal comes from. We are the top exporter to Africa, which is where I think this shipment was going. PoB handles many coal shipments. We became relied upon as the top exporter to other countries, especially in Europe because of the ban on Russian coal. With no other supplier, countries turned to us. The coal being supplied is for steel purposes and power. We also do import from other countries and we certainly use it for power. https://www.eia.gov/energyexplained/coal/use-of-coal.php

i just find it odd that "omg coal burning is bad, think of the planet" so we must go green (and that results in higher electric bills) - yet we continue to ship coal elsewhere to be burned.  NIMBY at work.
