We are getting anxious out here waiting for news on the i-130 we filed last April and we know one of the next steps is to file the i-864. However, everything I see online says they can take another 8+ months to process that form? Did we screw up our timeline and we are going to be stuck abroad longer waiting for them to process the financial documents?

Are you going through a consulate or are you both in the US?

I-864 is not filed (in a visa case) until AFTER the I-130 is approved.  You cannot file it "early".

We are going through the Seoul consulate. We are both in South Korea.

OK, but did you file directly with the Consulate or with USCIS?

Only after I130 is approved will you have to submit I864. Don’t worry as long as you submitted I130 and I130a you’ll be okay. ( we went through Seoul)

Is the I864 going to take as long to process as Google says? It's good to see someone else who went through Seoul, thanks.

We filed with USCIS. It's being processed in Texas. Since my husband isn't a Korean citizen, we didn't see how we could file with the consulate here.

You probably couldn't have anyway.  Then go with my first answer.  You cannot file the affidavit of support early.  It doesn't go to USCIS in a spouse visa case anyway.  It will be sent to National Visa Center, part of Dept. of State.

"Google says".  You can't file early anyway.  NVC will evaluate it within a month or so.  When you are case complete at NVC, then is when you go into the queue for interview in Seoul.  You are looking at an 18 to 24 month process, with the affidavit of support being filed about a year in.

Once USCIS approves your I 130, then it will move to the Dept of State pretty quickly and the National Visa Center will be in touch with you as to the next steps you need to complete, one of them being filing the affidavit of support.  My experience with the NVC process and eventually the scheduling of the interview at the Embassy was less than 4 months, however, it was for a different country, Indonesia, where I know the numbers are very low and thus the scheduling faster than other countries.  Good luck.
