I was never a Macy's fan, although I scored on my (only) two online purchases from them.  Does this closure news disturb you?

Feels inevitable to me. I've shopped online for children's clothing as they had good sales on the site, but going in person was always very disappointing. The sad part is that shopping centers losing another anchor store will just lead to more struggling and/or dead malls.

Definitely.  The excellent mall in Harlingen, TX became a shadow of its former self after Sears left.  And they still have Dillards and JCPenney there, and maybe also Marshalls.  We can all cite countless others.

I found Ralph Lauren pillows and the best suitcase ever.  The suitcase was the very last one available.  I haven't looked on the site in ages.

Agreed, and it's hard to explain why.  I always hated (and hate) walking by the perfume counter and ending up smelling like a cheap whorehouse.

 

Years ago, my buddy WCG (World's Cheapest Gringo) went to either a Macy's or a JCPenney when $-off certificates were handed out at the door during some promotion.  Most were for $10 or $20, but he got one for $100.  He went in and, calculating mentally only, got something like $100.43 worth of stuff.  The cashier was impressed.

I didn't grow up in an area with a Macy's so never knew what it was like during its peak. However, since I've lived nearby a few stores, it just seems like they totally gave up on merchandising or attempting to make the store appealing in any way. Things just seem kind of randomly placed, understaffed, picked over etc. I suspect this has been a long, slow decline and the store closures were overdue, sadly.

 

The site isn't that great either, to be honest. I do get some good discount codes from time to time and the sales are decent but the whole enterprise feels a bit neglected.

Plenty of interesting dead mall videos on youtube as well. Pretty much all the local malls I grew up with are dead or abandoned. Apparently crime played a role in the demise (which is so strange to me as I remember all these places being super safe in childhood.)

I wonder if the Macy's close to me will close.  It's in a fairly new shopping center area (not an enclosed mall) in Garland Texas.
