Flying with Nexus card to US immediately after green card interview (no passport)

Hello, my husband is a Canadian citizen, but lives in the US and is currently on a P1A visa (visa for professional athletes). He has his green card interview in Montreal on 12/13, however needs to be back in the US to play a game on 12/15. Has anyone traveled with his Nexus card while their passport and LTR visa is getting processed? Does his P1A become inactive immediately post-interview? He plans on returning to Canada for another game in Jan 2024 and activate his LTR visa when crossing to the US then. Thank you!

I thought NEXUS was only valid for travel across land borders?

NEXUS is a Trusted Traveler program to facilitate entry through Customs in Canada and the US.  You technically still require the passport for air travel.  There's no guarantee a plane won't have to divert to a location outside of the US or Canada and then your husband won't have proper travel documents.

He's used it before when flying and usually doesn't even pull his passport out.

NEXUS card is valid for air travel to the US without passport but only via Canadian airports with CBP pre-clearance -- https://www.cbp.gov/sites/default/files/assets/documents/2023-Nov/Carrier Information Guide ENGLISH.pdf

But how is he going to board a plane back to Canada?  Does Canada also allow air travel with just NEXUS card and no passport?
