Funny you posted this. I was just thinking about how much I like hearing different languages all the time. It doesn't bother me in the slightest that I can't understand a word of it. I can't really explain why, it's just something that I enjoy.

It doesn't bother me if 2 people are having a conversation in another language, I see that a lot here on base. Plus it's none of my business to hear other people's conversation anyway. But if they want to talk to me, they better speak english, or my language :P

Doesn't bother me one bit. I live in a major metropolitan city where tourists come from all over the world -- it's the same as Americans yacking away in English (since the majority don't speak a second language) when they are traveling in other parts of the world. Plus I "yack away" in Spanish all the time.

I think it's arrogant to demand that people carry on a private conversation in a language I can understand.

Not bothered by any language; in fact some are very plesant to hear, but sometime the volume is rather irritating and distracting to the point that I just stare at them until they walk away or lower their voices. Is it possible that the louder the voice the higher the insecurity is since I find that new immigrants of certain areas tend to over do it more than others.

I agree.

My father hates it though. He always assumes ppl are talking about him.

Caladan...beautiful wedding pics! I own the same bridesmaid dress but in black. One of the nicest bridesmaids dresses I've seen/worn. Very flattering.

I could care less what private individuals and businesses do.

What I do care about is when my government goes to great lengths to cater to any and every language on earth. Domestic government should be conducted in English only and it should be up to the foreigners to furnish their own translators or learn English. The exception being at airports and maybe a few other special circumstances.

I have lived in the border state of Texas for 51 years and it has gotten retardedly way out of hand in the last 20 years. It didn't used to be that way and it should never have gotten to this point. Catering to primarily Spanish in recent years has actually promoted illegal immigration. I have no doubts about that.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

does not bother me at all.. if it bothers you, then you need to look in the mirror...cause the problem lies within

My husband had an annoying American harass him and a friend at a bar because they were speaking Arabic...the guy even went so far as to follow them as they were leaving and continue to insult them  .

This was pretty unexpected considering we live in a progressive city with a good number of immigrants from all over the world. People are just going to have to accept the fact that the face of America is changing (or move to a small town--though many small towns are increasingly becoming more diverse).

OUt of curiosity, has anyone noticed people seem to have different personalities when they speak in different languages? My husband fluently speaks 4 languages, and I swear he is a different person in each!

BTW, I like hearing different languages everywhere. Sometimes I wish I could understand all of them, but most of the time it is music to my ears.
