A friend of mine clipped this gem from the paper, and I thought I'd share.

Q: I am a U.S. citizen. How can I get my fiance overseas a Fiance(e) visa?

A: You start the process to get your fiance here by filing USCIS form 1-129F, Petition for Alien Fiance(e). With the petition, you'll need to include proof that you and he had a face-to-face meeting within the two years prior to your filing the petition. {Four sentences detailing potential exemptions to the meeting requirement snipped} Once you petition for your fiance, the US. consul in his country should call him for his visa interview in six to nine months.

Its just that easy! All you need is the I-129f and a picture of the two of you on holiday and you're golden.

Yes, I know one member on another board that did not know that AOS is required to get green card, after getting his sweetheart over on the K-1 and marriage, just assumed that it will come. Fortunately he did some studying, and learned quickly that this is not an easy undertaking.

I skimmed through a whole BOOK on immigrating to the US a year or so ago, that contained the following advice: "if you are married or engaged to an American, you need to get a K Visa" (that was it, the sum total of the advice) - even more helpful, I thought. Very thorough and detailed.

2005 - We met

2006 - Filed I-129F

2007 - K-1 issued, moved to US, completed AOS (a busy year, immigration-wise)

2009 - Conditions lifted

2010 - Will be naturalising. Buh-bye, USCIS! smile.png

This is the problem we had too. As far I knew, we get married *had to be outside USA though*, and then you send in some paperwork to USCIS, wait a while, and voila, greencard.

I thought USCIS did *everything*.

After waiting 7 months, and finally found visajourney, I found out we were supposed to receive something 2 weeks after sending it in. Nothing. Found out, they liked the money, but not the paperwork and have no record of us *but they could tell us they had sent us a case number?*

*shrugs* they certaintly make it frustrating ><

The Beginning

September 29th, 1999 - 'hooked' up with Dave after chatting with him for about a year online.

October 23rd, 2004 - September 29th, 5 years to the day, he proposed to me =D

July 23rd, 2005 - Dave comes over for the wedding on July 27th at the beach :)

Sometime in December, he sends off I-130 to Texas and promptly leaves me in the dark like a mushroom x.X...

The Saga Continues *dumdeduuummm*

August - phone NVC. intriguing :\ Phoned again, ah hah! the truth... no record of us >< losers... Go and visit Dave for 3 months...

End of January, we sent the petition back in again. 2 weeks later, we actually get a number in our hot little hands.

April 5th - NOA2 approved!

April sometime, received and sent back Choice of Agent

May 18th - Received IV Bill

May 28th - Sent IV Bill MO back

June 11th - DS-230 generated

July 12th - Received and sent back DS-230 packet

July 19th - NVC Sent Husband checklist of AoS. They forgot to fill in N/A fills with.... N/A x.X

July 23rd - DS-230 entered

July 26th - NVC received checklist regarding financial suppliment (ie, got a talking to on the phone :P)

August 1st - sent financial papers back

August 3rd - (Automatic msg) Financial records lacking! ARGH!~

August 7th - Received actual fixed paperwork - 'processing'

August 17th - NVC COMPLETED CASE!~

September 10th - Received packet 3

September 17th - Medical in Brisbane

November 14th - Interview VISA GRANTED

December 8th - Landed in USA

December 24th - GreenCard Arrives

I was more fortunate. I was working for a Canadian Member of Parliament at the time and familiar with Canadian Immigration processes. When I had a Canadian who was married to a US citizen and who had left the US to visit family back home - without an AP - walk into the office for assistance getting back to the US, I learned a lot about US immigration very quickly! When I surprisingly fell in love with a US citizen myself, I was a lot more prepared than many - including him! - about what the process involved.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

What? You mean you don't automatically receive US Citizenship once you marry an American? ;) Surprisingly enough, I've had many people think that.

Today I had the hairdresser tell me that she doesn't understand why anyone from Canada has to go through the immigration process. Because.... after all.... we really are like part of the US.:lol::lol:

Seriously. I've heard "well why didn't you guys just get married last time he was here?" on more than one occasion.
