Finding an H1-B job as a UK teacher?

Hi all,

 

As the title says, I am a UK teacher considering possibilities to move to the US (I have family there, although sponsorship isn't a possibility as I am married). I have been advised that teachers are eligible for H1B visas. Does anyone know how I can go about finding a sponsor for this?

unless its a private teacher position or college teacher position than you need to apply for jobs and interview.

Realistically, it would probably have to be a private school as they'll have the funds to sponsor you. I'd focus on the British schools as they will definitely hire Brits.

 

And what do you mean sponsorship isn't a possibility as you're married? What family members do you have there?

I have heard of teachers being sponsored in challenging areas, Normally the Unions would not be happy but where there is no other option they tend not to mind so much. I think J's are used as well as H.

My partner's parents hold green cards. But apparently they can only sponsor "unmarried" children.

And when are they eligible to apply for citizenship? It would be a long route but worth doing as back up in case you can't find a job/sponsor. 

 

What does your husband do for a living, is there any more likely employment based route for him maybe?

They would need to naturalise before they can sponsor a Married Child.

Welcome to the forum.

 

You may be eligible, but be mindful of a few things.

 

First, if you are eligible, remember that the DV program has a lottery system.. So you may meet the requirements for eligibility, but you may not be one who is selected into the program.

 

Second, it will still take some time. You can apply for the DV program for 2025. So it may still be a couple of years before you can migrate if selected.

 

Like others have mentioned, you may want to see if your in-laws can apply for Citizenship.

This year I think is first year in a long time where UK is eligible. And DV enrollment is still on going for few more days (until Nov 7th) - https://dvprogram.state.gov/

 

With H-1B and moving - aside from it also being a lottery unless sponsoring org is cap exempt - remember it is a non-immigrant temporary work visa. At some point it expires.
