SSN for my childs

Hello everyone, 

 

My child was born out of America and 2 weeks ago I applied for the CBRA at the embassy. They told me to wait one month for the CBRA and 2 weeks for their passports. My question is, how can I apply for their SSNs? Do my kids need to be here in America to apply or even if they live aboard but I can still apply for their SSNs?

 

Someone told me that I need to bring them to America first and then apply for their SSNs.

Check this for indonesia https://www.ssa.gov/foreign/foreign.htm#ICELAND ( seems office will be in phillipines ) can apply by mail ( see link no 2 )

I checked but don't really understand. Can you please explain in more detail, please?  do I need to contact the counselor in Madagascar that I applied for the CBRA? or do I need to bring the kids to America? 

 

I am living and working here in America but the kids living in Africa with their mother.

I literally thought u are indonesian because of ur profile said indonesia and I assume u live in indonesia with ur USC child.

Once they hold the CBRA interview , approve the case, you will complete an application for SS number at the same time you complete child’s US passport application….so wait

Thanks for your answer. I already pass the interview last week and I am back to the US. Last week I bring my kids to Madagascar and we passed the interview then I sent my kids back home and I am in the US so should I write them for the SSN?

You can start online , see applying for first time in link, then go in to your local SS office for help, since they will require documentation.

There was someone that received SS numbers for his children by mailing the forms in and they got them back fast - try searching on VJ.

that's the link that i posted on top especially if the parents is outside USA.

since the mother is in the US, i think going to the local SSA office also an option

I just received an email from the US embassy in Madagascar regarding my question:

 

 

 

It's complicated. even if my kids come to the US but I still need to contact US Embassy in Paris? or just it's because they are out of US?

If your children will remain outside the US for a while, then contact Paris. If you will be bringing them to the US, then just walk in to local SS Office, they will help you.

Ah ok. I am going to bring them for the summer here in the US. Maybe I need to wait until they come here
