Hello everyone,

My name is Ella and I am new to this forum/website but I really need some help here.

I am now a Permanent Resident in Canada and my fiancé is a US citizen.

I wanted to apply for Canada citizenship in February, 2022.

And we are planning to get married in Canada when he comes to visit me in June, 2022, and also file a CR-1 application.

so when he’s filling out the CR-1 application, my current passport is required. But now I am worried that my current passport (from my home country) will be invalid when my Canada citizenship is granted, while we are waiting for the US CR-1 application.

in this case, do we need to start it all over again since my passport will different? Or is there’s way to contact the US embassy to update the change for our application? Does anyone have similar situation before?

Thank you very much in advance!

Aren't you getting your Canadian citizenship first before marrying your fiance?

If so, you have nothing to worry about because you'll need to use your Canadian passport details when filling the CR1 I-130  application because he can't petition you for CR1 until you guys are married.

Or

Are you saying you even though you'll apply for Canadian citizenship in Feb 2022, you might not get your Canadian citizenship approved before you get married? If that's the case use your current passport/leave blank and update to new passport during NVC stage.

I take it you are from a country that does not allow dual citizenship.

Begs the question how long the Canadian naturalisation process take.

Thank you for replying. I am trying to apply for Canada citizenship in Feb, and its processing time is over 12 months. And we are getting married and then file CR1 in June this year.

so my Canada citizenship will come and my passport will change after we file CR1. I am worried this will affect our CR1 application. Or should we wait for my Canada citizenship first (which take over a year from now…)? Or should we file CR1 and get granted first and then I apply for Canada citizenship later?

File now, you will have your Canadian passport  before your immigrant visa and update your info.

No it does not allowed. :(

If I were you:

-I will apply for Canadian citizenship as planned.

-Get married as planned.

-File I-130 CR1 petition as planned. [But leave the travel document section blank]

-At NVC stage, Provide Canadian citizen details (Based on dates and timelines you've provided, it's highly possible you'll be a Canadian citizen by then). If not, you can still delay the NVC stage a bit until you have your Canadian citizenship.

To be clear, information about the beneficiary's current passport is asked for, but there is no requirement to actually have a passport at that time.  Enter the correct information on the petition.  If a new passport is issued later, use that information when actually applying for the visa.  The two do not need to be the same.
