So let’s get to the good stuff. What percentage of HIV diagnoses across all the genders do black women represent? And which race/gender combination represents the most  HIV cases?

in addition to the 3 you mentioned there are: agender, androgynous, bigender, butch, gender expansive, transgender, gender fluid, gender outlaw, masculine of center, non binary, Omni gender, poly gender / pan gender, trans, two spirit, cis-<gender> (the gender assigned at birth … any of the above)

 

Really surprising that a cis-human primate like you wouldn’t be on top (pun not intended) of all this. Reported

I think that this article is an op-ed so that opinion is, just that.

 

It does list factors such as poverty, lack of access to lifesaving drugs, and lack of health insurance. There is one issue that they mention which is something that has been researched before and applies not just to black women, but all women. https://www.pnas.org/content/113/16/4296 It is a rather odd and uncomfortable subject, where it may take a very long time for women to feel listened to, not dismissed when they present with certain symptoms, and actually receive a proper diagnosis. This is somewhat prevalent in OBGYN (black women in particular have a higher risk in the US of dying in childbirth and a 40% higher risk of dying from breast cancer) in being misdiagnosed or treated abusively. There are still some very wrong notions about African Americans in relation to their health which are incredibly improper tropes, and completely inaccurate which circulated in the medical community. I cannot say for certain if perhaps these women, having come from a poverty background, with a general lack of healthcare... it would stand to reason that their choice of doctors would be of inferior quality... of course they would have a problem having lifesaving treatment or being listened to. The process is hard enough for treatment for HIV, let alone the stigma. Interestingly, while browsing through the article, I noticed one about a very long study of products specifically marketed to African American women that had an increased risk for breast cancer.

 

On the flip side I tend to think that women often have a hard time getting their men into a doctor and getting checked out, but when they do present and complain of some painful issue - we may feel they are listened to more just because of some sort of 'toughness' trope, and that if a man says he's hurting then maybe he's really hurting (but goodness sake we push out babies and if we're hurting then I hope the heck someone pays attention)... I dunno, I've been around a lot of different doctors, I've seen the lack of listening and misdiagnoses... and then others that really do care. I wish everyone could have access to excellent physicians.
