Been seeing mixed messages about whether getting married on a K1 before applying for a SSN is a bad idea or not.

Situation -

Fiancé and I will fly from Peru on Nov 1 to my parents house. My father is a minister and wants to marry us there that before we travel to my city. Talked to county clerk already and got application and a form to fill out if your partner doesn't have a SSN. Seemed pretty straight forward.

Will I have problems with the SSN office, trying to apply after marriage? Would like to get her SSN as soon as I can.

Should I apply with her maiden name? Not sure if this could cause problems with AOS.

Getting a SSN with maiden name doesn't affect AOS. Lots of people have issues getting their SSN after marriage.

I suggest you read the SSN guide here on VJ, and apply BEFORE marriage.

The problem is not if the marriage takes places before or after applying for the SSN. The problem is that applying after getting married will technically require the immigrant to enter their new married name (if changed) on the SSN application and that will result on a mismatch case and SSN will be denied. So when applying for a SSN after arriving in K1, always apply to a SSN with maiden name, even if the marriage already took place.
