Hi all - my husband's conditional Green Card expires 10/8 (yes, we did file to drop the conditions and received a notice that his green card would be extended for 18mos while this was processing). His father died yesterday and he needs to leave the country (likely beyond 10/8). He can travel, but will he have problems getting back into the country (even with the paperwork showing the extension)? Does he need to apply for a re-entry permit? Should we wait for the physical plastic green card? Thanks for any help here!

He can travel now with his GC and the extension letter; he won't face any issue when coming back -unless he returns once the extension letter expires-.

He does not need to wait for the GC -which can take well over a year- nor apply for a reentry permit -unless he plans to stay in his country over a year-.

And truly sorry for his loss.

The extension letter extends the expiration date of his green card.  Therefore, if the extension letter is valid, he can re-enter the US using it along with the expired GC.  No re-entry permit needed.
