10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

It's not spying. And the article makes it clear what it is, even if they don't explain the reasons why.

Hypothetically speaking let's say you decide it would be a good idea to start talking to a member of a foreign criminal syndicate, a foreign agent, or maybe someone under investigation for doing very bad things. Maybe you know who they are and you as a journalist are investigating or researching them. Or maybe they're your friend. Either way there's a good chance the NSA has picked up on that conversation. Imagine if you will, if you started talking to the very top leader in a terrorist organization in Afghanistan, or a sleeper cell that was being monitored. Maybe they are trying to recruit you as an asset and you have no idea their real identity, maybe you are just best friends and you're asking how their kids are, or maybe you're up to something too. You should not be surprised if your conversation finds it's way into the hands of the NSA.

I think it was clear that the NSA is listening or has access to pretty much anything.  I have no allusions that my communications with my wife especially when she is overseas are captured, and I imagine they have access to the information all the time.  As the article opined, if someone in the Biden Admin (Susan Rice) was digging deeper, that may in fact be an issue.  Time will tell, but we have a pretty good idea how the Obama Admin handled FISA warrants, I don't expect any difference with the current one.

The non-transparency predates the Obama administration - and has been raised as an important issue by people all over the political spectrum.  EFF has good fact sheets/overviews on these topics.

I agree, the W. Bush Admin was not much better, but for some reason there appeared to be a snowball effect under Obama.  Maybe it was just more people were paying heed then.  Regardless, the FISA process, NSA, et. al. is certainly something that can be misused by people in DC that want to remain in power.

Ding ding.  Also, most people seem completely apathetic about it ("you should not worry, if you have nothing to hide"), so I don't see "transparency" coming to the US in the near future/in our lifetime.

I think part of the snowball effect is that it has becoming much easier to collect data.  Paper files on Spanish citizens under Franco (and other dictatorships), vs mass electronic surveillance today.
