An openly gay Texas teenager called out his high school after he was given in-school suspension for wearing nail polish.

Trevor Wilkinson, 17, said he originally received the suspension on Monday after he returned from Thanksgiving break with his nails painted, which violates his school's dress code.

"Imagine your school not allowing boys to paint their nails and giving boys iss [in-school suspension] for it," he said in a tweet on Monday. "And the whole administration being okay with it, homophobic and sexist? welcome to west texas."

...

The student handbook says that men are prohibited from wearing makeup and nail polish. If a campus administrator determines that a student is in violation of the dress code the "student will be given an opportunity to correct the problem at school," it says.

Seems silly that nail polish and makeup should be limited to girls and women. This boy's nails are short, neat and well-polished. I don't know how it's somehow different when it's a boy when a girl wearing the same polish wouldn't be in trouble.

i know a few guys that wear stuff like nail polish, its really not a big deal except to the religious nutjobs

straight men wear it too from time to time. i've seen it at concerts and such. its just like wearing piercings or tattoos

There would probably be a ton of really angry 'goth' or 'punk' or 'metal' type of kids mad about this. Still there is a dress code for the school, so he or his parents should have been aware of this before suffering the consequences. Not saying it's a code that makes any sense.

Odd stuff in the dress code... leggings and jeggings are prohibited unless the girl is wearing a shirt/dress/tunic that's slightly above the knee. It would also seem having dyed hair is not allowed either. Older boys aren't allowed any facial hair at all and some of the hair restrictions are also quite odd.

Compare that to our local county's dress code that really doesn't care what a student arrives in as long as it's not violent, offensive, or revealing.

"The student handbook says that men are prohibited from wearing makeup and nail polish."

I really don't get why this is a big deal and why public schools are given such latitude on dictatorial rules for things that really just doesn't matter. I'd really like to see them explain why they think "men" can't wear makeup, polish, dresses, etc. They'd look incredibly dumb trying. This is a time where developing children near adulthood and where experimentation and screwing up are the most common (next to toddler years), testing boundaries, and so on. This is how they learn "who" they are, trying to suppress that really just stunts their personal growth and delays it. Just let the kids be fricken kids and stop trying to push agendas on them.

I didn't think any public school would ever prohibit this these days. I figured it would have been a religious institution, but it's not. So strange.

I feel like maybe this is related to the Harry Styles nonsense the other day in some way. Some people for whatever reason feel threatened by others dressing or presenting themselves in non-stereotyped ways that in no way affect the happiness, safety or comfort of others. Yes, I know it's school, and these are minors, and that schools may impose dress codes. Been there -- I happened to be a 16 year old girl who liked wearing a black trenchcoat on slightly chilly days but was told NOT to wear it to school because it was "threatening" (this was two years post-Columbine). It was literally a London Fog trenchcoat I took out of my mother's closet to borrow. I tried to make a stink about it -- I'm an honor student, enrolled in AP classes, I have never had a disciplinary issue before, etc. etc. -- but I was told that it was because I was all of those things that I wasn't going to get disciplined and I was getting a chance to think about my clothing choices instead of getting detention or suspended. I told them that I would comply but only under protest, because I felt the rule was absurd but I didn't want to blow my chances of going to a good college. I wore a black armband for a week afterwards but it was kind of pointless because I wore mostly black back then anyway.

Years ago, someone told me that dabbing clear nail polish onto a mosquito-bite will immediately stop it from itching.  Haven't tried that, but dishwashing liquid definitely works.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
