Yes, photocopies are acceptable.  The originals would need to be filed with federal, state and local returns.  Typically only copies would be available to show.

when you receive notice of interview,  the documents that have to be originals will be stated

there will be a check list (or use to be one) saying things like the following:

1  this has been recd

2  original is needed

3   item not needed

4   or proof is needed

some of this is very embassy dependent

if you supplied IRS transcripts W2 is not needed / it is only when you sent 1040 copy

Now does this also extend to the tax returns itself? I know I have to sign off on my returns, so does a photocopy of this make a difference either?

Yes, you would only have copies of the signed tax returns available to show.

You send in your W2's with your tax returns?  It's been many years since I was a W2, but sure don't remember sending in supplemental paperwork like W2's.

Now of days with most taxes being filed online, I don't see that happening

Likewise.  I haven't mailed in a W-2 in many years.......I do, however, remember W-2s with carbon copies long, long ago which had to be mailed in....LOL.  I honestly don't think are any original W2s these days.

If you file by.paper, yes. W2 is required, as well as 1099's.

From Form 1040 instructions:

Quote

Assemble Your Return

Assemble any schedules and forms behind Form 1040 or 1040-SR in order of the “Attachment Sequence No.” shown in the upper-right corner of the schedule or form. If you have supporting statements, arrange them in the same order as the schedules or forms they support and attach them last. File your return, schedules, and other attachments on standard size paper. Cutting the paper may cause problems in processing your return. Don’t attach correspondence or other items unless required to do so. Attach Forms W-2 and 2439 to Form 1040 or 1040-SR. If you received a Form W-2c (a corrected Form W-2), attach your original Forms W-2 and any Forms W-2c. Attach Forms W-2G and 1099-R to Form 1040 or 1040-SR if tax was withheld.

Edit: 1099 if tax was withheld
