Court forgives debt for man who lost more than $500K playing rock, paper, scissors

 

In Canada, gavel beats rock, paper, scissors and a gentlemen’s agreement.

A Quebec appellate court ruled in favor of a man who lost more than a half-million dollars playing the schoolyard game rock, paper, scissors.

Canadian Edmund Mark Hooper came up short in a 2011 best-of-three contest in which participants count to three, then unveil a hand-sign representing a rock, a sheet of paper or a pair of scissors.

That defeat left him owing fellow phalanges sportsman Michel Primeau $517,000, according to Canadian news outlet The National Post.

I usually feel bad for people who get into financial difficulties - but this guy is just WOW.   If I were doing that, which I wouldn't, I would quit after losing my first $5.  Why did he keep playing?

  I read it was 3 rounds for a single wager of $517,000. I guess that probably leads to more questions than it does answers. 

 

  Canadian law is interesting when it comes to these kinds of things. We used to have the contest where you had a chance to win a free soda if it was printed on the liner under the bottle cap. To claim the prize you not only had to get the "free" liner, but you also had to answer a skill testing question first, and you had to do it at the store where you claimed the prize. Kind of strange, but the law didn't allow for pure luck to determine the outcome of a sweepstake or lottery.
