NYC morgues near capacity, DHS briefing warn

Officials were told that morgues in the city are expected to reach capacity next week, per the briefing.

 

The Department of Homeland Security has been briefed that New York City’s morgues are nearing capacity, according to a department official and a second person familiar with the situation.

Officials were told that morgues in the city are expected to reach capacity next week, per the briefing. A third person familiar with the situation in New York said some of the city’s hospital morgues hit capacity in the past seven days. And a FEMA spokesperson told POLITICO that New York has asked for emergency mortuary assistance. Hawaii and North Carolina have asked for mortuary help as well, and the disaster response agency is currently reviewing the requests, according to the spokesperson.

366 dead in NY as of today.  And if they DO hit 900, there's always NJ morgues.

Ish.  Of course, the bodies will be around even after the numbers of affected and dying decrease, so that issue will persist for a bit longer.  Thru May, I am guessing.

Italy had to cremate the bodies right. I wonder if this is an option for the USA too. I mean, the virus would still be alive even the host is dead (though i read up to how many hours - so unsure of if keeping the bodies would be wise to keep the number of infections down)

Cremation is certainly an option in the US.

In China all the bodies were cremated and there could be no funerals. In Iran it is football fields of mass graves.

i know but it is "an option" not something that the authorities would force people to do, i suppose until the morgues are full.

 

this is a grim topic but looking at Italy and China deaths, i suspect USA is heading the same path.

The morgues are only full until the funeral homes pick up the remains and handle the funeral end.  Whether the government, in this case the state governments since they are responsible for licensing funeral homes, order cremation is yet to be seen.

A) China's numbers are highly suspect, and as such, not really reliable for predictions.

 

2)  So we have more cases.  Big deal.  Those cases were already there, we just didn't confirm them.  Deaths are what matter most.

 

People have had it, coughed, gotten better, and no one even knew they had it.  I hear more stories like this every day.  The extreme cases are the minority, in spite of what you may read/hear online.
