Travel to Mexico with expired green card

I am from the UK, my green card is expired, but accompanied by a i-797 form. I am traveling to Mexico this week, and I didn't anticipate this to be an issue until I happened to check and I see that Mexico doesn't accept this form as an extension of my valid green card. Can I just travel as a British citizen?

5/10/2017: Filed for AOS from K1 Visa

5/23/2017: NOA1 received by text and email

5/25/2017: NOA1 received in mail

6/12/2017: Biometrics appointment completed

7/27/2017: Case ready to be scheduled for interview

You would enter on a British passport regardless.

 

When you exit by air you show the passport, green card and extension letter at check in.  If you exit by land you just show the green card and letter.

I traveled to the US from Chile via Mexico City in January. It wasn't an issue. I think it would be an issue for those who get a 'visa free visit" from being an LPR, meaning without a green card they would need a visa due to their home country.
