Your I551 stamp that you’ll get when you enter the US will act as your green card. As a permanent resident you will have work and travel authorization immediately. The only filing you’ll have to do, is if you’re married less than 2 years when you enter the US, is apply for “removal of conditions” 2 years after becoming a permanent resident

Our CR1 Journey:

USCIS Stage:

  • Feb 14 2019: NOA1 (NSC)
  • July 31 2019: I129f NOA1
  • Sep 19 2019: I129f NOA2 (Denied - 50 days from NOA1)
  • Sep 19 2019: I130 NOA2 (Approved - 217 days from NOA1)

NVC Stage:

  • Sep 27 2019: Sent to Department of State
  • Oct 31 2019: Case number received (34 days since sent)
  • Nov 1 2019: IV & AOS fees received & paid
  • Nov 14 2019: IV & AOS submitted
  • Dec 18 2019: All docs accepted, but one additional doc requested (5 weeks from submission)
  • Dec 18 2019: Requested doc submitted
  • Feb 19 2020: Documentarily Qualified (9 weeks from 2nd submission, 14 weeks from first submission)

Interview Stage:

  • Mar 11 2020: Interview letter received
  • Apr 1 2020: Interview date
  • Mar 17 2020: Interview cancelled due to COVID-19
  • August 3 2020: Rescheduled letter received, new appointment August 25 2020
  • August 25 2020: Visa approved at interview! (558 days from NOA1)
  • September 10 2020: Embassy received passport in mail
  • September 15 2020: Passport with visa in hand

Good day

Will I be able to secure a job before recieving my green card and social security?

Is there any more filing to do when I get to the Us, like do I have to apply for authorization to work?

How do I do that ?

You will be authorized to work, but you will likely have to show any employer a Social Security Card.....

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

Ive never shown my ssn card to any employer,  when filling out the i9 I show my passport which is a list A document,  and since the passport with i551 stamp is also considered a list A document the ss card not required.  The problem will be not having an actual number

YMMV

Yeah, I agree that it isn't mandatory to present the card since employers can verify SS numbers through the Social Security Administration, but I have had to show my card for several jobs in the past.  Having a number (as you said) is the important thing.

But I will have to wait 3 months or 90 days to get a number ? Or as soon as I enter the country I am to go to the SSN office to get one using my entry stamp in passport ?

I lost my card 20 years ago.  I just replaced this month when I went to SSA with the wife

If you want to visit the SSA office after arrival you can.  Dont check the box for automatic issuance

My wife received her Social Security Card 11 days after POE (Cr-1 visa)......she marked the box on the DS-260, and it arrived automatically.

As @payxibka stated, you can go the SSA office if you want....but don't expect them to issue you a card on the spot.

You are authorized to work upon entry of the immigrant visa.

Your employer has no (proper) way to do payroll without the SSN. How exactly they resolve this w/o an SSN, if they do, is a discussion with them.

I'm a USC and every employer I've had has required my SSN. The actual card is often requested, but not strictly required. This is a payroll/wage reporting issue, not a work authorization or I-9 issue.

From the IRS:

Quote

You are required to get each employee's name and Social Security Number (SSN) and to enter them on Form W-2. (This requirement also applies to resident and nonresident alien employees.) You should ask your employee to show you his or her social security card. The employee may show the card if it is available. You may, but are not required to, photocopy the social security card if the employee provides it. Record each new employee's name and social security number from his or her social security card.

Ok so I have 2 options:

1. Check the box (which I already did and submitted, because it said if I check no I will not be issued a card) and receive a card shortly after entering US automatically without going to the office.

Or

2. If I had said no I would have to go to the SSN office and do it on my own but not automatic.

Correct?

Not yet heard of someone changing the actual number before unless the person can prove the number's been misused in the past, or can prove the existing number will be misused through abuse/harassment.

They can. I believe you have to provide direct info regarding harassment and stolen identity etc.. https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0248-do-you-need-new-social-security-number#new
