  • A former immigration officer for the US Customs and Border Protection agency lost his job and now fears deportation after an ironic twist of fate - he found out he wasn't actually a US citizen.
  • Raul Rodriguez worked for the US government since 2000 processing deportations. But while trying to help his brother emigrate from Mexico, Rodriguez received a call from the Office of the Inspector General informing him they had discovered a Mexican birth certificate for him.
  • KRGV News reports that Rodriguez, who has lived in the US for almost 50 years and served in five separate US Navy deployments, had never seen his real birth certificate before, and believed he had been born in the US.
  • His father then revealed to Rodriguez during an OIG investigation that he had actually been born in Mexico, and Rodriguez lost his job.
  • Rodriguez filed for residency with US Citizenship and Immigration Services but his application has been withheld from processing, and he says he is constantly looking over his shoulder.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

After nearly 20 years of working as an immigration officer for the US Customs and Border Protection agency, Raul Rodriguez knew a lot about deportation - he processed them. What he didn't know was that he would soon fear deportation himself.

After serving out his ban in sunny mexico he can come back legally someday

Unless he has been voting.  Or otherwise posing as a USC.

Wait a minute....he's never seen his own birth certificate in 50 years of living in the US?

Wouldn't he have been made to produce some form of proof of citizenship to gain a US passport?

In fact---wouldn't he have had to produce proof of citizenship when filing for his brother??  How did he get as far as even submitting the filing correctly?

His application for PR was denied.

He filed an appeal.  It isn’t going anywhere.

Is a fake US birth certificate in itself a claim of false US citizenship? I'm curious.

They said no.  His problem was using it for his brother’s immigration case.  USCIS popped him for fraud.

How did he serve in the Navy and Border service without a birth certificate?

Article didnt say he didnt have a birth certificate.  Article said he had a fake one.
The fake US birth certificate filed with immigration was what got him flagged.

The article doesn't use the phrase 'popped him for fraud'

At one time it was common to buy Birth Certificates from Mid Wives just north of the Border.

Correct.  The article says “falsification of information”.  Which is fraud.  Except fraud is shorter and easier to type.  For dimmer readers.

This guy knew the law.  His father knew the law.  Using a falsified birth certificate for chain migration?  No.  These games that are being played with our laws have to stop and be stopped and every single benefit ever obtained needs to be stripped away.
