Financial Aid with extension letter and green card

Has anyone ever applied for financial aid while there green card is processing?  I applied and they wanted me to upload my card. I told the lady it is expired and I also got an 18months extension letter.

The extension letter extends the green card. Upload the green card, front and back and the extension letter.  Financial aid asks if you are a citizen or legal permanent resident. This should suffice.  Just provide what is requested,  you should be okay.

Extension letter extends LPR status. If they are weird about it or don't accept it, please explain this to them and show them the part of the letter where it says that.

 

Worst case scenario, you can get an I-551 stamp in your passport.

They didn’t accept it. I got accepted in the college and I did my application for financial Aid and I was awarded a loan for 12,000 after that they wanted me to  verify my citizenship status. So I uploaded my Extension letter and my expired green card and I explained to them. They told me that I won’t be able to get the money. I have to wait until I get my green card.  I just dont get why It’s not acceptable. Because I read on google that you are qualified to get financial aid with an expired greencard only if your permanent residency has expired you are not qualified. So, I don’t know 🤷🏽‍♀️

They didn’t give it to me. I’m wondering if it’s just that specific college. But the lady said, it’s not the college. It’s a requirement from FAFSA ( Federal Student Aid). She said, it’s one of the verification student loan ask for. So, even if I apply for another college I’m going to have the same problem. 

 

But, they gave me another option at the college, it’s called pay as you go, so I’ll just work with that until I get my new green card, then  I’ll pick up where I left off. The pay as you go option is not a bad one, and it doesn’t come with interest. It’s divided into months for you to pay back. Example , if I’m paying 600 dollar for 1 semester, they gave me 4 months to pay it back without interest. 

I just didn’t want to borrow a loan from the bank to start college, because the interest is too high. Lol. But I like this option too, I’ll see how it goes.

You should call USCIS and get the I-551 stamp. They will give it to you and this would solve the issue. If you live near a USCIS field office, it's worth a try. USCIS gives out the I-551 stamps in cases like this where the extension letter creates problems.

Yea, I’m going to call USCIS and see if I get a stamp. Hopefully it works. I’m going to also ask them about the financial aid and see what they say.

It may just be the school.  Is it an accredited school? We didn't have a problem at a state university when we applied.
