Should i apply for ITIN?

Hello.

My wife currently holds an account with Navy Federal and we contacted them to see if I could be put in as a joint account owner or atleast to have an account, as her father said that he knew people in the Navy that had done that with their non-resident alien spouses. Navy Federal said we need to apply for the ITIN. Will applying for the ITIN bring any negative benefits into my life e.g. double taxation or the like. I'd really like to have this account as it'd help jumpstart a lot of stuff for when I get to the US.

Thank you!

We were able to get my husband on my account and the rep didn't even ask for his social security, just his passport.

Edit: We have NavyFed, too.

ITIN is for those who cannot have an SSN.

It is in fact in your benefit to get one so you can add your spouse to tax returns to file as MFJ and reduce your tax liability.

Huh. My spouse is in SA too and they said the opposite to me. Strange. Maybe its worth calling them up again.

We didn't call. We went to the office on 1604 and signed him up right there. He did have his social on him but the rep never asked for it.

That's probably where we differ as we didn't go in person. but the previous person stated the benefit of ITIN anyway so I think that route is fine anyway.

You can do that also with a social security card (which you should have by the time tax filing season comes again anyway) but it's completely up to you.

The US and UK have a tax treaty in place where you would never experience double taxation.

You can only apply for the ITIN when filing tax returns / it is W7 form with proofs (like marriage and birth)

https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/nonresident-aliens

you are just applying for CR1 and i found this to be an advantage (we were high fraud country and needed to show commingling assests)

the advantage is to be on bank /credit union account when no SS number

our credit union put him on my account when the ITIN came but since he was out of the country ,  he was not allowed a debit card till he arrived

and If the USC has a good credit record,  you are also establishing a good start on this too

I did read this. I came to VJ for some double-confirmation. You guys are great at that.

That's true. Hmmm. To be fair, we're sending our i-130 off literally tomorrow so I'm not sure about that entirely. Depending on service centre, RFE's, etc.

Yes. We're not from a high fraud country or anything but we definitely want some more evidence. I'm always going down the better safe than sorry route lol and also because we're always sending money to each other, it would be nice if I could just put money into a joint account more easily. It'll definitely save a lot of needing to keep finances separate. Especially as this process is gonna make my life go on hold for a while 😟
