I have seen it in person and frankly,  it makes me.dread going back.  It's simply disgusting to see someone squatting to use the bathroom on the sidewalk ahead as you are walking to a restaurant.  Or to get accosted by several who smell very ripe, begging for change.

 

There are homeless on the streets in nearly every (significant) city in America.  I see them hanging where we shop for groceries.  But they sit quietly, hoping for spare change, not up in our faces begging.  And certainly not taking a dump in front of us.  What's going on out West is an epidemic of much greater scale.  Perhaps CA should take some of their federal funding , $436 billion (highest of all.the states), and open some homeless shelters or similar.

The majority of homeless in my current location are not even from this state. You'll find the same thing in Baltimore actually.

I know people say that a lot but, again do I need to point out that cities and towns in MD with the highest homeless population, heavily blight and poverty, with surging drug use are actually pretty solidly in the red column. TB, if I took you around my neck of the woods, you would see things I expect some think they'd only see in Democratic inner cities. It's just not a red or blue problem. It's an everywhere problem. There are by the  2017 count, some 30,000+ homeless in the state and 250+ ''camps'' (we have about 50 of these in our town.. and they are terrible). 8.75% are veterans. Many are sex offenders. The luckiest that aren't living on the street or in cardboard box tent camps, are living out of 'motels' in some pretty extreme conditions or squatting. For my area 17% have been in this area for less than 1 year, 36% up to five years, and 7% for their entire life. Out of those surveyed 28% said they were homeless due to drugs, 56% had a criminal history, and 72% said they simply had no income. I would assume the previous two reasons would provide a high barrier here.

 

Within walking distance there is a home that has seen at least 5 different squatter families. The current living condition there is no running water or electricity. The grass is chest high, and the yard is filled with trash and human waste. This is not an uncommon thing to see in this town. I have also often seen homeless dumped out of the hospital, wearing no clothing, ODing in the street. Some of the most dangerous places to live in MD, besides the city, are all Republican strongholds. The governor pointed to a report saying homelessness was decreasing, but did not mention that homelessness is actually spreading and increasing into suburbia and traditionally wealthier counties, and the very red eastern shore. Does he understand why there are less homeless? Because they are dying. No politician in this state really cares. Youth homeless is also increasing - the parents OD eventually, leaving the child with nothing.

We just had this homeless dude get arrested (I've seen him all the time wandering the streets.. including the time I saw him start wailing on a woman with a baby in her arms!) for stealing a soda. You'll often see him in gas stations go up to the counter and start causing a scene when he refuses to pay for food, and then demand that someone in the line pays for it, and then when that doesn't work he threatens the cashier to pay for it. He's got a rap sheet so long... probably been arrested every month since 2000, and every month they let him back out. Of course they got him again a couple days ago for doing it. He told the police he wants to be put away forever since he will never stop stealing food. I'm sure they will let him back out...
