K1 college?

Beyond the academic paperwork needed is someone who is in the US on a k1 visa able to attend college before getting a green card? Do they need a social security number?

They are permitted to study while in status and while AOS is pending.

Local requirements apply - some may treat you as an international student for x months until you establish residency in the state (different than your immigration status!). Others may be more willing to work with you to get in-state/resident rates.

Depends on the state.   Some require proof of legal presence (EAD or GC).  Some may require a SSN.  Best to ask the admissions department.   Also in most states you will pay the non resident rate until you meet the residency requirements.

Was not a problem, enrolled my fiancee less than 30 days after arrival. If you don't want to get gouged by the non-resident rates, get the social security card within the first few days of arrival ( My wife applied for hers 18 hours after POE and had it in the mail 2 weeks later) then go to the DMV and get a State ID card with the SS card, your I94, and passport. You can easily get a state ID in most states without much trouble, it may be limited term and expire in a few months, but it doesn't matter, once you get registered for the school or university the first time, and you have the local State ID card, they should set you up for in state resident rates, and once your in, your in, it's doubtful they will change your rates unless you need to re-apply or something, but by then you should have EAD and or the Green card, and then you will have plenty of local ID. It worked fine for my wifes school, and now she has EAD, and a permanent State ID card, so if they ever ask her to prove residency again it will be easy. Sometimes you can get away with adding her to a few utility bills and showing them as proof of residency. Most of the schools will work with you in the admissions department, as they are very familiar with visa's and international students.
