Business owners have mixed reactions to Dallas County DA's new policies

Dallas County's new district attorney announced his office will no longer prosecute "theft of necessary items" up to $750.

The announcement drew an immediate reaction from small business owners who are worried that word of the policy will encourage shoplifting.

While the Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot tried to clarify his new policy on Friday, some business owners are worried about what the DA's new policy will mean for them.

 

Cody Ellison and his business partner own three shops in the Bishop Arts District. The DA's letter to the people of Dallas County does not sit well with him.

“To have the thought of someone being able to come in and steal $750 from us and there be no consequence is unfathomable to me,” Ellison said.

The DA’s letter says: "Criminalizing poverty is counter-productive for our community’s health and safety. For that reason, this office will not prosecute theft of personal items less than $750 unless the evidence shows that the alleged theft was for economic gain."

That is why I mentioned grocery stores, but technically, clothing could be considered a consumption item/necessity.

To put the policy in practice for specific cases is one thing.....but to publicize it is stupid.

I do not blame the DA, well maybe publicising it, he has limited resources and no doubt has to prioritise. Probably a lot of this stuff is drug related, they get a slap, put back on the streets and repeat again and again as nobody who should be looking at the big picture is.

 

So what happens, the shops close or move, will they could put up their prices as well but eventually they can not operate in such an environment. Well traditional shops anyway. A self service shop can only operate if customers self service and pay.

I think that is the real point here, publicizing decisions regarding prosecutorial discretion seems to be ill advised, and putting a dollar figure on it seems misguided.  I know this guy wants to be pro-poverty and everything, but maybe don't announce it.

 

As to the Seattle is dying video, I have not seen it, but I have heard about it as I regularly listen to KVI's morning host John Carlson.  I believe the Seattle government did not like it much.

My Grandparents were poor, they did not steal, my assumption is that most of this is drug related.

I am not sure if it is all drug related in today's world, but I suppose a lot of it is.

All would be to simplistic.

 

For example I am sure my local small supermarket has pilferage but when they had a 'festival' near by the losses skyrocketed to the extent they employed off duty Police to patrol the store.

 

So what is a business to do? Police are likely not to bother, see Seattle, I would be looking to move out asap. Cash out whilst, if you can. Not going to get better.

I completely agree, and we are seeing a migration of folks away from areas like that, but for some reason when they find their new location, Dallas, Austin, etc., they forget the reasons why they left their last home or so it seems.
