Wonder what the cameras will do if they see a driver using a certain finger gesture?  Big brother is watching.    It is interesting that this story contains a lot of hopes.

Volvo will add in-car sensors to prevent drunk driving

GOTHENBURG -- Volvo hopes to reinforce its reputation for safety-first driving by installing cameras and sensors in its next-generation cars starting in the early 2020s, monitoring drivers for signs of being drunk or distracted and intervening to prevent accidents.

Volvo said the cameras and sensors will be installed on all models built on its SPA2 platform for larger cars such as the XC90 SUV, on which its driverless cars will also be built, starting in the early part of the next decade.

The behaviors that Volvo hopes that its cameras will be able to detect include lack of steering input for extended periods, drivers with their eyes closed, as well as "extreme weaving across lanes" or "excessively slow reaction times," Volvo said.

Why not just one of those tubes?

Because they hope to be able to predict human behavior and as a whole, they hope that enough people are willing to give up certain freedoms to those that know better.  I wonder if they will maintain recordings of the video feed for potential police application?

Sticky tape should solve the problem.

I have a friend who flies A320's, surprised that often he flies with something wrong, they obviously have crucial warnings that will stop them but most seemingly can be reported and will be dealt with later.

If Volvo basically shut the vehicle down if all the sensors are not working, perhaps a bag covered a camera, then I can only imagine the consequences.

Why surprised?  Ever consider how many millions have driven cars with a CEL on?  Or an airbag warning light?

I have an old truck and probably half the toys do not work, I had not thought about it and when this came up I was surprised, passenger jets up there etc.

I swear, many automotive engineers think that as soon as the CEL comes on people pull to the side of the road and shut down until they can determine why it came on.

Yeah, it's a horrible idiot light.  Nowadays, there should be text popping up on a screen detailing the issue.

Very few things are actually critical to flight.  Hence the purpose behind the deferred write-ups.

So now we go from convicted drunk drivers having a device in their vehicle to everyone having one? I have never owned a Volvo and now I probably never will. Though I'm sure this will be in every vehicle eventually and required by law.

This is the next big thing and its going to be huge. I suspect it will be a while before it becomes standard on other brands and there are enough new vehicles to make it very effective. I suspect in less than 10 years its going to be very prevalent

I had a quick look and it sounds a bit like IFF on Planes, so they can share information their sensors can pick up?

Something like that but IFF squawks a encrypted code when interrogated to identify friendliness of air craft if recall correctly from my ADA orientation session at ROTC advanced camp . If it flies it dies

ADA Officers where a strange lot
