Proving you were never married

Good day VJ members.  I have a question a friend of mines is asking.  She is a US citizen who wants to marry a man from Togo, where I was married.  The Togolaise government, however, wants her to show that she is not or has never been married.  How do you go about doing that   I remember being asked to do the same thing but can't remember how I went about doing so. I remember going to the Togo embassy and getting a form that says I'd never been married but can't remember the whole process.  I anyone has a similar experience, please share with me how to go about this.  Can you do it state side or do you need to do so in the country you will be married in?

Since the US does not have a central marriage registration system, I believe a sworn & notorized statement would suffice.  I had to provide such a statement in Taiwan a few years ago.

In Taiwan, I did it at the US "consulate"........

A Single Status Affidavit / Affidavit of Eligibility to Marry is usually what other countries want to see.

The Dominican Republic requires an Affadavit of Single Status for a marriage license.  I typed a brief statement and paid $100 to a local attorney here in the USA to certify it.  Your friend might want to call the local courthouse in the Togolaise city where they want to marry to specify what is required.

Go to the nearest US Consulate or embassy, this is a service they offer to complete a certificate of Marriageability.  Usually you do this by appointment, and there is typically a fee of around $50 for the notarized statement.
