Hey everyone,

I just received an email on September 12 about how my petition was approved and they have now sent my petition to the department of state for visa processing. The email tells me that I need to go to the USCIS website to find information on what to do next for the visa process. I went on their website and found this page https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/immigrate/the-immigrant-visa-process/after-petition-approved.html.

If I assume that the department of state for visa processing in my email is the department of state's national visa center (NVC), how long do I need to wait until I can start the DS261 online form and pay the processing fees? Will I get a notification from the NVC when the petition arrives to inform me I can now start the next online processes? I worry that the online server will not be setup until after the NVC receives my paperwork. I tried signing in to the consular electronic application center, but it claimed the birthday did not match the case number. I am not sure if the birthday required should be my wife's or if I do not exist in the system yet.

What does principal applicant mean? Is that the beneficiary or the petitioner?

As a side note, I have now tried both my wife's birthday and my birthday for the principal applicant birthday question. Both times it claims "The selected Case Number and Date of Birth combination you entered does not match our records. Please try again or contact the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where your case is being processed."

I guess I need to wait until I hear from the NVC...?

Yes, and it can take up to 6 weeks to NVC receives your case and 3 weeks to have it entered to NVC's system.  However, it normally takes less.

I don't remember what the format was, but my husband made this mistake a few times. (I'm not sure if you're the US spouse or the foreign spouse) US dates are written month/day/year. So make sure that's the way you're putting it in.

Thank you for the information. I feel most of this process is just waiting with little to no information.

Congratulations you have to wait for about 6-8 weeks for  NVC to send you a welcome letter with your NVC case number, then you can continue your case

Time frame for nvc processing depends on where you are applying from. That said, you will need to be pro active by getting the necessary documents before you receive the welcome letter.

The Principal applicant is the beneficiary.
