Should I have my passport stamped for I-551?

Hi Everyone!

 

Hope all of you are enjoying the summer season!

 

I would want to seek advise from everyone about the extension letter. Mine is coming up this September and my I-751 is still in the process (Transferred to Local Office). 

 

Should I have my passport stamped with I-551? I dont plan of going out of the country if I dont have my greencard in my hand, just to make sure lol.

 

Is it necessary? Thank you to everyone who will contribute!

stamp is only if you want to go out, renew DL, show proof at work else you dont need. i dont know when you applied but you should get 18 month extesion letter.

I would not advise you go without proof of your current legal status in this current anti-immigrant political climate.

 

So yes, I would obtain an I-551 stamp in your passport.

you say your extension letter is valid until September, recently many people have been getting new letters to extend the expiration to 18 months past dating

I would definitely wait until September before trying to get the stamp in the hopes that your new extension letter will arrive first

Yes I am working now so I guess I need a stamp. But no, I have not received any extension letter yet. Thanks for your feedback!

Hi Hypnos, I totally understand but my extension is up until September 27th that's why I am not sure if I should get a stamp a month before.

Yes it is September 27 but I am not sure if I should schedule now cause my concern was, I might not receive the extension and then too late to schedule for infopass. Thank you!

I don't think there's a downside to scheduling an Infopass now. If often takes some time to get an appointment anyway, and they're typically 2-3 weeks out.

From my own experience, infopass appointments only book out 2 weeks, meaning if you want an appointment 3 weeks from now for example you would need to wait at least 1 week for an appointment to be available

I did go to get a stamp (although the 18m extension letter arrived a couple days later) but only went to get it because we have planned travel outside the US and needed proof of status in the US in order to get a visa,, otherwise I would not have bothered getting the stamp

So, if you do not need to extend your drivers licence, do not have planned travel, and are not planning on changing jobs soon, I would not bother with a stamp, at least I would not worry about an infopass until the middle of September

Lots of people have been getting the extension letters, so I would just check in the appropriate RoC group to see when people start getting their letters

as far as a potential downside, I have seen many people get turned away from the infopass without a stamp for coming in too early, which I have seen  as  little as 2 weeks before expiration

Some offices require you to have under a month remaining on your I-751 NoA or existing I-551 passport stamp before they will give you another.

I just had an appointment with USCIS for an infopass on September 7, even though she gave me options of the schedule as soon as the day after that call. She confirmed to me that 18th month extension letters are only for filers before July 10th 2017 and it is very good that I had it scheduled. I can't do it early because of my schedule, but I can do it if I want to.

you were given inaccurate information, my RoC date is in August and I have the 18m extension, as do many other VSC filers in August now

I would image in the ones for September filers will be coming out soon
