For Canadian K1 Beneficiaries who are currently awaiting AOS and who have also undergone a name change via your Marriage on the K1 Visa what are our steps regarding our Canadian passport, updating our new name with CRA, provincial driver's license, Provincial Health Card, etc? Are we expected to be updating theses - particularly our passports?

Once we get married in the US and you are taking on your spouse's last name, you are changing your actual name. Does that all of a sudden mean we need to request our passports in Canada to be updated? Or we have to wait for AOS to be approved since update our passport requires us to send our passport back to Canada for the replacement? What are the steps for this? Same goes for CRA, etc. I know we aren't really traveling or going home until we get the temporary green card but I am just trying to understand what we do/must be doing after the fact to update our official documents.

Has anyone gone through this recently?

~~Moved to the Canada forum, from K1 P&P - This is no longer a K1 question, but a country specific question regarding passports.~~

Mod hat off

Many of us wait until the passport is about to expire. Their is no updating it after marriage but applying for a brand new passport in your new name.

oh really? So the passport just stays as your "old name" for years on end? My passport doesn't expire for like over 5 years lol...

Also - did you update your status with CRA and such/new name? Not really sure how "exiting" Canada works/when you do that especially as it relates to tax purposes later once working and living in the US...

Yes you don't need to update a married name. You can just bring your marriage certificate to match GC to passport when flying.

I never did update CRA or anything else in Canada for that matter. No need to do Canadian taxes after the first year unless you will still be working in Canada (border crossing).

The biggest thing is to make sure the GST/baby bonus are stopped if you get any.

In regards to CRA.  I contacted CRA the other day since I will be keeping a few things in Canada like my bank account to continue to pay existing life insurance, and have a Canadian credit card open.  I filled out an NR73 ford that takes about 30 weeks to be looked over.  On this form it has a few questions and they will determine if you are a non-resident or not.  Apparently when you move you are eligible for non-resident non-refundable credits for the remaining months in the calendar year you did not work in Canada for.  As for the amount I am not sure.

Also, for CRA you can have them send future correspondence to your future address in the US or keep it a mailing address in Canada if applicable.
