My 17 year-old brother just got approved for his visit visa B2 (6-month visa) and he's coming to the U.S on May 24th. So my question is:

Can he come here by himself since he's under 18?

Yes. Many airlines allow children over the age of 15 (may be different age depending on airline) to fly solo.

Most airlines charge adult prices from age 12.

Actually lot younger than 12 try 4.

Very true, my son flies a lot and I have not gotten any discounted airfares since he was 2 when he flew for free. I remember being so ticked off at paying full price for him when he was five for a quick 3 day weekend vacation with family.  He was no more than 20 pounds with a back pack full of junk food and juice boxes but I still had to pay nearly $500 for his seat.

I’m personally of the opinion that a seat is a seat, yes some kids’ bags weigh less but others bring strollers car seats etc on that are not usually charged extra so I think it all comes out in the wash. I’m thankful we still get a 25% discount on one kid for now when we fly internationally.

Intersting discussion on pricing though, I didn’t realize how different the various regions are. Those flying European airlines definitely seem to get the advantage here.  I guess the real budget airlines don’t differentiate though even in Europe.

Who is UAL metal?

Interesting, seems ANA differentiate according to flight origin

Child (2 to 11 years old)

Children 2 to 11 years old will be charged 75% of applicable adult fare. This may apply only when departing from Japan. Fare depends on the route, class or the discount rate.

Adult fare will be applied to children 5 to 11 years of age not accompanied by an adult over 12 years of age
