Even more specifically, it's the endorsed (not approved) visa that acts as proof of LPR status.

A visa cannot be a green card holder. It's a piece of paper. :P

yes and the visa itself is not the temp green card.  the stamp in the passport is

once your petition is approve by the USCIS They will forward everything to the NVC where your spouse will applied for the visa. once the NVC approves the application  They will forward it to the US embassy in your wife country. your wife will do an interview at the embassy. If approve your wife will be issue the CR-1 visa . upon arrival in the U.S  and endorsement of the visa, It will serve as a temporary Green card for one year  until the actual green card arrive

So your wife will be able to travel with the temp green card
