So my wife and I bought tickets to South Korea for early next year. Upon reading some information on the consulate website we may have an issue.

"For nationalities other than the U.S., individuals must submit original of their U.S. permanent resident card or valid U.S. visa - the visa itself must not have expired. Stay extensions or change of status in the U.S. approved by USCIS is not accepted as a valid U.S.visa."

This concerns us since obviously her green card is expired, but we have the 18 month extension letter with us. Im concerned she might not get the visa and we could bone our trip. What to do in this situation?

reach out to consulate in USA. call or email them and get it clarified.

So I called embassy on Monday in DC when I couldn't get through to my more local consulate.  They said it would be okay to use the extension letter with the expired green card.  Also since it could be considered a transit visa since Korea is only the first stop on our journey, we might not even need a visa at all.  I'm looking more into it to be sure, but even if we have to pay for the visa I don't mind.  I called the local consulate again and they answered and stated the same thing the DC agent stated, that it's okay to use the extension letter.  They even directed me to the website for the application and gave instructions how far in advance to submit it with our evidences of future travels out of Korea (which has been common for us in other Asian countries as well).  I don't think we will have to go for an interview as it's at least a two hour drive to the consulate, but if so I know we would do it.  We will be submitting proof up the ying yang cause this trip is something we have wanted for a long time.

So things are looking good there.

Side note @starsky when going over our 18 month extension letter, it was not the actual extension letter.  It was the gray version that said the 18 month extension letter is coming eventually.  I'm sure I confused this along with others recently.  Thankfully our trip can use the 12 month letter and still be in the safe zone if the 18 month letter doesn't come in time for it.  We might go get an I-551 stamp in the passport when it gets closer to our leaving date to have that added proof there for our travels.

Hey, thank you for sharing! That is really helpful. Glad you got everything sorted out. I am just curious why do you need a new Social Security Card: is it b/c your new employer requires you to provide it?

They called me back for the job, after they called Immigration to clearify my status, I also got the my passport stamped, so it made everything fast and simple.

I went for orientation today and everything went well, so far so good.

God bless us all as we wait. 🙏🏽

Nice nice!

Thanks for all the details, made it really easy for me adding you to the tracking table.

As for your moving address, lots of us haven't received the 18-month extension letter yet so I think you're still good. Have you set-up mailing forwarding in USPS?

Many of us will be filling for naturalization as soon as the window opens. It's true that you need an approved I-751 form, but I have also read that filing N-400 can expedite the I-751. However, things are constantly changing at USCIS and timelines that are true today, often aren't in 3-6 months time.

Thank you for adding me to tracking table. I would love to share my status with all February filers.

I set up USPS mailing forward before I relocated states. So far I haven't received anything about 18-month extension letter yet. My case status is at Fingerprint review was completed 4/11/2018.

Hi everyone,

Yesterday I went to a training about how to help prepare people for their Naturalization interview and test at the USCIS Field Office in Tampa, FL as part of a  school project. One of the speakers was a case immigration officer. I asked him if it was advisable to apply for Citizenship when the window opens even if the applicant had pending I-751, and he said that it was.  He also mentioned that they will try to schedule both interviews for the same day.

I thought that would be interesting information to share since many of us are thinking of applying with pending I-751. It's always nice to get a green light from someone who is actually familiar with the process in depth.

Also, if there is people in the Tampa Bay Area who need help with getting ready for the Interview and the Civics test, there is plenty of people and organizations who are helping and are actively engaged in making sure that soon-to-be-citizens will pass the interview successfully. One of my professors at school is one of them. I will be happy to direct you to someone.

Have a great one!

Hey guys, I have a question. I know everyone is going to file for citizenship during the three year mark but I was wondering if there are any risks of not filing it right away. I do not intend on filing for the citizenship for at least another 5 years, will this cause any issues once I finally decide to do so?

Not at all, my friend filed after 7 years, and it went well. Don’t worry 😉

Good luck 🍀👍🏽

My coworkers mom just applied after 30+ years here, went without issue.  We are applying as soon as possible so we don't have to deal with the waiting, excess cost and uncertainty that comes with a green card.  The political climate always makes you wonder what if?  Easier to apply for citizenship and be done with USCIS once and for all.

I actually met an immigration lawyer a few months ago and we talked about the green card extension and citizen. The lawyer advised me that these days there is no issue to keep extending 10 year green card as many as you want.

This is only current advice from the lawyer. So, it can be changed in the future, I think. However, at this moment, I trust the lawyer.

My friend's mom has been a green card holder for 28 years now. And she is fine. So I think the lawyer is right too for now.
