Category : CR1-Conditional Ir1 Spouse of US Citizen

Hello,

I received an email from NVC for Interview at MTL embassy in the 3rd week of Feb , looking for any tips for things to be mindful off and to be successful at the interview. Also is this a relationship interview, should we prep for some questions in advance?

Background : My US Citizen wife(we got married in US) is sponsoring me, we both live and work in Canada since past 2 years(I am Canadian PR and she is too now) and  we will be headed to Montreal for interview. During this time Wife has been filing US Taxes every year, even though the only income she has is in Canada from her Job. She has also visited her home and mom/dad there multiple times in the past 2 years. To sponsor we are going the Assets route.

Ref of my case:

To prove intended future domicile in US after my Visa, we will be submitting the below :

1. Letter from her parents, that will be living with them and they are ready to provide us accommodation.

2. Cell phone bill on her name.

3. US Bank account and fixed deposits  maintained there. MY funds in Canada, but in US dollars.

4. Car Loan document and as my wife is still under the family insurance in US, the document for that.

5. Voter registration-Waiting on this.

6. Moving quote.

7. All US mails and tax returns filed for previous years still go to her US mailing address. So maintaining that as the mailing address.

8. Student Loans - Payment being made on time.

Please let me know if there is anything else that we should bring to the interview to strengthen our case.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post.

Why do you think it needs to be strengthened?

So that we don't get a rejection?

As per Visa Journey members and older posts I have seen, Montreal is known to have issues and give out rejections when it comes to  proving domicile. So the post to get an opinion on if the proof i have for domicile would be enough.

The questions they ask are pretty simple. If a couple is in a real relationship they don’t have anything to worry about. It’s gonna be pretty mundane stuff.

Thanks, any other things to keep in mind, I am more worried about Domicile than relationship.

FYI, you will be interviewing with the one and only US Consular Immigrant Visa Unit in Canada, located in Montreal.  There are no Embassies of any country in the world located in Montreal.  A Consulate is not an Embassy, and some Consular IV units are not even located in the same building as the Consul General.

No country has more than one "Embassy" in ANY country and with the debatable exception of Israel, ALL EMBASSIES are in the Capital City of the country.  There are also no US Embassies or Consulates IN the US or any of its territories.

Facts are cheap...knowing how to use them is precious...

I was concerned about the domicile requirement as well, as I have lived outside of the US for 14 years. Your list of intended proof sounds similar to what I provided, which was sufficient in our case.

I provided:

  1. Letter from my parents that we can live in one of their properties once we arrive in the US
  2. Copies of my state income tax filings
  3. Bank/credit card statements with US address
  4. Copies of email queries on school registration
  5. Copies of email queries on daycare registration
  6. Moving company quotes
  7. Voter registration confirmation
  8. Copy of US drivers license

Hope this helps and good luck!
