Lawyer Necessary?

First, let me apologize if this question has been asked, but since times are changing I ask because it seems like the rules/regulations are always updating.

Background:

My fiancee and I are thinking of getting married in the United States and she is a Taiwanese citizen and I am a US citizen.

Can someone help explain the process or is there a guide already available? Also is hiring a lawyer necessary?

Thanks for the help!

At the top of the website there is a link to "GUIDES". It has all the info you need.

Follow the guides here and you will be much better off.

When filling out the I-134 form a friend of mine consulted with a lawyer about it. They followed it BY THE BOOK and the resulting I-134 form was dismissed at the interview because it didn't include all of the evidence that the consulate needed despite what the instructions said. Goes to show you that sometimes lawyers actually complicate things.

I remember there was an article here long ago about an interview with the USCIS. Once of the questions was "Do I need a lawyer" and the answer was "for what?"

If you ever have questions - ask them here and you'll get the correct answers most of the time.

Thanks everyone.

I have some questions -

1) My fiancee is a Taiwanese currently working in Hong Kong. She used to study and work for USA for 2 years. Does she need to provide  police certificates from all the 3 countries? Also, is there any additional documents she needs to provide?
2) G325 form - is it optional to fill? Does it make any difference on the process?

  1. No need for a US police cert...they will run an FBI background check on her anyway. As for the other countries, if she's lived there for at least 6 months since age 16 then she needs a police certificate, or anywhere she has been arrested. As for additional documents, this varies by embassy...I'm not familiar enough with those to say.
  2. The G-325A is no longer used with the I-129F.
