Applying for SSN although I've ticked automatic assignment

Hi,

 

in October I will fly to Miami in order to activate my DV visa. I will stay there about 8 days. 

 

In the application form DS-260  I've ticked the box which says something like: "automatically assign me a Social Security Number" 

 

Now I've heard that the system of automatic assignment for some reasons almost never works properly. 

 

Does someone have experience applying for the SSN although you have applied for automatic assignment in the application? 

 

What worries me is that I have to register for Selective Service, I want to to that as fast as possible and I had planed to do that within my stay in Miami.

all you have to do is go to a social security office they are everywhere

Its    hit or miss. Since you checked the box I'd wait a month or so to see if it arrives. If you don't receive it go to the closest SSN office and apply.

Untrue, it works most of the time, it's just that people don't go ranting on the internet when the system works

SSNs usually arrive fast, within 2 weeks. Usually DV entrants who go in like you do to SS offices are told that it's in the system and they just need to wait, but if you have time to join the lines in an SS office you can certainly give it a try.

I will have time to check that, so if it's already in the system. So I will definitively have to wait until I have the physical SSN in my mail in order to register for Selective Service right?

Sorry, that bit I don't know - no one in our family needed to do that so I never looked into it. I'm sure someone else can answer though.

Didn't work for me.

 

Went to the SS office (horrible place) after a couple of weeks and all was well.

The automatic assignment didn't work for you? Did you had to register for Selective Service?

Ok, I understand. Well, what worries me is that I have to register for selective Service within 30 days after my arrival in the US. If the SSN does not arrive within three weeks I will have left only one week to apply manually and to register..

It works for most cases but of course you'll only hear about the cases where it didn't work. I got mine within two weeks.

 

You said you're only going for eight days to activate your visa/green card. Just remember that your SSN and green card will be sent to an address in the US once you immigrate. I'm sure you thought of that but just putting it out there.

 Ok, good to hear. Yes I know, everything will be send to my Dads best friend adress, but thanks for the  Info!
