Yes, federal plaza in Manhattan is the NYC field office and where interviews take place.

 

However, as you live in Brooklyn, your fingerprints will be at the ASC in Brooklyn (around 13th ave/60th St), and your oath ceremony will be in downtown Brooklyn.

CR1 / DCF (London): 2012 / 2013 (4 months from I-130 petition to visa in hand)

I-751 #1- April 2015 [Denied]

 

April 2015 : I-751 Joint filing package sent fedex next day 09:00am from UK ($lots - thanks). 
Jan 2017: Notification that an interview has been scheduled at a local office. Bizarrely still no RFE... 
Jan 2017: 2hr wait, then interview terminated before it began, due to moving my ID to another state 2 wks prior. New interview 'in a few months...maybe.'   Informed them that divorce proceedings are underway, but not finalised at this time. 
March 2017: An Interview was scheduled - marked as no-show as they didn't actually send out a notification of interview. FML 
April  2017: Filed an official complaint with the ombudsman, and have requested Senator & Congressman assistance
August 2017: Interview - switched to a (finalised) divorce waiver. Told that decision will be made that afternoon, but no problems foreseen with my case. 
October 2017: Letter of Denial received - reason given as 'I-751 petition was not properly filed'. Discovered ex-spouse made false allegations to USCIS in 2015. No opportunity given to review & refute allegations  - contrary to USCIS policy.

I-751 #2 - Oct 2017 - Mar 2021[Denied] 

 

October 2017: Within 72hrs of receiving denial notice, a new waiver I-751, divorce decree & $680 cheque, sent to Vermont via FedEx overnight 9am priority.  
Dec 2019: Filed FOIA request for full A# file
Feb 2020: FOIA request completed - entire A# file received as a .PDF; 197 pages fully redacted, and 80 partially redacted. Don't waste your time!
March 2021: I-751 #2 denied for lack of evidence. No RFE, no interview, and evidence in previous I-751 not reviewed - contrary to policy. Huge errors in adjudication.

N-400 - Feb 2018 - Apr 2021 [Denied]

 

February 2018: N-400 filed online.  $725 paid to the USCIS paperwork wastage fund

February  2019: Interview - cancelled after a four hour wait due to 'missing paperwork' on their end. Promised Expedited reschedule.

March 2021: Interview letter received, strangely dated after I-751 denial. No I-751 interview conducted. N-400 interview and test passed, given 'cannot make a decision at this time' paper due to the ongoing I-751 nightmare...

April 2021: N-400 denial received citing recent I-751 denial as basis for ineligibility, even though it should have been a combo interview 🤯

Service Motion - March 2021 [Sent via FedEx & COMPLETELY IGNORED by USCIS]

 

March 2021: Service Motion request sent overnight addressed direectly to field office director, requesting urgent review and re-opening, based on errors in adjudication - citing USCIS policy, AFM and memorandums as basis for errors. This was completely ignored by USCIS.

 I-751 #3 - June 2021 - Jan 2024 [Denied]

 

IT'S GROUNDHOG DAY

June 2021: I-751 #3 (30+lbs/5000 pages of paperwork) & another $680 sent to USCIS via FedEx ($300+..thanks) .... 

June 2021: Receipt issued, card charged, biometrics waived, infopass scheduled for I-551 stamp number ten.....

Feb 2022: RFIE (no, not an RFE, a Request For Initial Evidence) received, for copies of the divorce paperwork that they already have 😑

July 2022: Infopass for I-551 stamp number eleven.....

August 2023: Infopass for I-551 stamp number twelve....

January 2024: Denial received, ignoring the overwhelming majority of the filing, abundance of evidence, and refutation of a provably false allegation. The denial also contradicts itself in multiple places, as if it was written by someone with an IQ <50.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

 

2024: FML. Seriously. I'm done.

Showing my estimated completion date as Sept 2018....with a bit of luck that (or sooner) will remain the case, although I feel that may be a little optimistic given the pending I-751 mess that needs to be resolved first.

I have a question for some of you like @GoingThrough, @vkhutchings, @YashMin, @Dinosaur2013 who completed the process in less than 6 months. What was your estimate completion time? Mine is 7 months (Sept 2018) and I'm wondering if that would change (hopefully for shorter). Thanks!

"door to door", mine was actually practically 6 months - I applied in Aug 15 and got the oath on Feb 9. I don't remember the original estimated time to complete, but after the interview, they estimated 4 months (through April), but it took 2 instead. Long story short, I think you can probably guess for ~6 months, with an optimistic 5, uber optimistic 4, or pessimistic 7+.

 

Would definitely recommend to do an early walk-in for biometrics (pretty much as soon as you have the letter/pdf).

Mine also took almost 7 months. Submitted online on June 16 and Oath on Jan 12.

you're right it might be between 5 to 7 months.

I don't want to scare anybody, but my takes longer then 12 months. I filed Feb 22nd, 2017 and as of today (Feb 15th, 2018) I am over the interview, but no oath letter yet.

I had no special issues which could explain why it took (is taking) 12+ months in my case.

I filed the same day as you and had my interview in July and was asked for more documents in September which I submitted in October and haven't heard back since. After countless requests and inquiries, I received a response to my request that said my case was approved October 28th and I should be receiving an Oath Letter. Yesterday, I heard back from Senator Gillibrand's office and they got the following response from USCIS:

“Please be advised that the applicant’s Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, A204838102, is under extensive review and is currently being reviewed by an Immigration Services Officer. The adjudication of the Form N-400 cannot be completed until all the documentation, checks and information have been properly assessed and cleared. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is committed to adjudicating immigration benefits in a timely manner, while also ensuring public safety and national security. Once the assessment of all the evidence is completed, a final decision or notice of action will be made and the applicant will be notified by mail.”

 

I am not sure what the hell is going on there, but, I have no clarity on the process or how it's moving forward. Good luck to you!

Yes, the whole thing seems quite a bit arbitrary. People filing at the same office might have 5-6 months total processing times, while others 12+ months without any obvious reason for the difference.

In my case it took 11 months to get an interview date. For you the same took 4 months. Who knows what is going on over there...

 

The only possible explanation I am seeing is that sometimes "files get lost for a half a year - a year" without any special reason (bottom of the pile). I remember somebody wrote earlier that his file was on the desk of the supervisor for a few months at the bottom of the pile before it was "found" again. :-)

Well, I have filed two e-requests and two requests over the phone and made one InfoPass appt where the officer has told me that my file is approved and I should receive an Oath Notice. I have contacted the Ombudsman Office, two Senators, and one Congressman. I am making sure that I am in their face all the time and not giving them a chance to forget about my file.

It seems that is the right thing to do, as based on comments from others it seems that sometimes raising requests against your case helps it to move forward.

Unfortunately I didn't know about this, so I was just patiently waiting for my interview date, 11 months, while it turns out most other people get theirs in 4-5 months.

If I would have known that this is how they work, then I would have been all over them like a tick. :-)

 

Long story short - anybody who is just starting the process, there are some indications that it might help things to move along, if you chaise your case when you feel that it is falling behind the normal processing times.

Yes, the paper applications taking longer than a year. One of my wife friend submitted last year Feb end and she got interview on Jan 25, 2018 but she went they said they didn't receive her file and she will get another date soon. Since then no update.

You can see online filer cases move faster than paper applications.

I got a notification for fingerprinting on Feb 17th, and got the letter (PDF) online on Feb 20th.

You can see online filer cases move faster than paper applications.

I don't know, I see a good number of people with paper filing who good processed realtively fast (see below digitalvx - 7 months, jon29 - 5 months, Ipeksen - 7 months, NICK79 - 8 months, Private One - 5 months), although certainly not as fast as the online filings in H2 2017.

 

It might also be that as online filing only started mid 2017, what we are seeing is that those compete for resources with the paper filings made earlier (basically skipping the line).

It would be hard to imagine that only the fact of paper filing would cause an 8 months delay (12+ months processing of paper vs 4 months processing for online). Why would it take 8 additional months for paper filings? Are they shipping them around the world 4 times (container shipping fully around the globe is about 2 months)? I believe there is something more to it than just paper vs online filing.

 

Probably some kind of a resourcing issue - like there is a bottleneck somewhere in the process and the online and paper filings both compete for that resource without consideration of their priority date causing earlier paper filings being pushed further and further behind. This is the same when you are lining up in a physical line and people keep being added to the line in front of you - how long it will take for you to get to the front of the line will be a lot longer than those who got added in and more and more of those get added, it might be a point where you will never actually make it to the front of the line, just keep falling further and further behind.
