My husband had his citizenship interview this past Tuesday. Here is what he said and what he remembers:

 

1) You have to wait outside the building until exactly 15 minutes before your scheduled time, so dress warm!

2) First he answered the civics questions. He only remembers two of them that she asked:  Who did the United States fight in WWII?  Why do some states have more representative than others?

3) Reading: Who lives in the White House?

4) Writing: The President lives in the White House.

5) Then she went over the application. She never said what she was going to do next, just jumped around, so your English needs to be pretty decent. She asked him questions about himself, travel, work, me, and his children who do not live in the United States. She asked him the yes/no questions, but not every question and not in order. She would ask a bunch that were "no" and then throw in a "yes" question in the middle. She asked him what the word "genocide" and "weapons" means.

6) He applied based on the 3 year rule and brought a TON of evidence. A whole binder full, in plastic sheets, and labeled. She was extremely impressed by this and I think it made her not ask to see so much evidence. She asked to see our marriage certificate and proof that he sends payment for his children where they live in the other country. He brought print outs from Western Union and a pile of receipts for sending money. She had him count the receipts and was very serious about this piece of evidence. 

7) She said he was approved and will receive a letter in a few weeks about the oath ceremony.

 

From start to finish, it was about 45 minutes. 

 

Advice: bring a lot of evidence. You never know who you are going to get. This lady didn't ask for any bank statements, mortgage info, nothing that proved we lived together but she was adamant about proof of child support. Better to be over prepared than under prepared.

In his account online it says he was approved and is in line to be scheduled for an oath ceremony and will receive a letter within 30 days.

I concur with the above reply.  Take any and all documents in their original form if you have them.  My take is that I'd rather go with extra documentation that may not end up being needed rather than find that I don't have something they need.  Knowing my luck, the very document I leave at home will be the one they ask for.  And yes, take everything in original and a copy.  That way you can hand them the copy if they require it. Showing the IO that you have come prepared when they ask for something goes a long way.

Good to know, this is what my husband did for ROC and we're planning on him doing it again for citizenship. Thanks for the write up!

Were you there with him, in the building or at the actual interview? I have my interview next month and the letter says only a lawyer can accompany me. Dont want my hubby to take off and later not allowed into the building due to covid restrictions.

No, nobody can go in except a lawyer due to covid. I took off work to drive with him there and waited in the car in the parking garage.

Updates in my April filers thread - Chicago is reusing biometrics it seems for the April filers below, so finally some movement in Chicago:

A quick checking in - June 2020 Chicago N400 filer, I just received a biometric reuse notice... I am guessing it is probably on pace for April/May interview timeline.

Applied August 2020. Just checked the documents tab in my online account and got biometric reuse. Estimated time also changed from June to May.

Anyone at Chicago received two separate interview notices for N-400 and I-751? My wife’s N-400 is scheduled for Monday and the status for I-751 just changed to interview scheduled.

Just to update everyone on the status of my husband. He passed his citizenship test on December 15, 2020 as I had posted previously. His oath ceremony was just scheduled for January 22, 2021 at the Dirksen Federal Building. Nobody can go in with him

 

We are so grateful for Visa Journey and thrilled this years-long process is almost over. Good luck to everyone!

How long did it take for the status to update online after interview from Interview scheduled to approved?
