Turkish police use tear gas and 'fire rubber bullets' to disperse gay pride march

Turkish police have used tear gas and reportedly fired rubber bullets to disperse civilians trying to stage a gay Pride march in Istanbul in defiance of a ban.

Activists for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex rights had vowed to hold the event on Sunday despite being it being officially forbidden by the governor's office for a third year running.

 

A statement also said the governor's office had not received a valid parade application - a claim rejected by organizers.

Until three years ago, Turkish authorities had regularly allowed Pride marches to take place.

Up to 100,000 people attended Istanbul Pride in 2014 but Turkish police dispersed Pride crowds in 2015 and 2016 using riot-control methods.

 

Love that #progress by NATO ally Turkey. Allow it, then ban it. Think they need some awards and medals by the left in the name of tolerance.

Uuuugh Erdogan is allowing things to slide moe and more downhill in Turkey and the majority of Turkey allows it. Such a shame, such a shame  Things were far better like 3, 4, 10 years ago there and I'm afraid they won't get better until the Islamist that is Erdogan is gone.

I agree. I've been to Turkey a couple of times back when I lived in Israel and it was a very different country before Erdogan than it is now.

Yeah, its such a shame They have always had a tug between being progressive and being Islamist and it seems to recently have tipped to the bad side..
