My mother in law received her visa 8-8-2017 10 year multiple entry and flight booked

for September 6th 2017.

You say your mother in law just got her multiple entry visitor visa so when you filed for her what exactly did you say on her application that they gave her a 10 year visa? I'm asking as I'm wondering if you must state on the app why she needs a 10 yr verses a shorter time. I to will file for my mother in law and I'm praying they give her a 10 yr visitor visa also.. Any info u give is appreciated...

Question for the OP: what did your mother in law say was the purpose of her visit?  Did she say to "help with baby"?

I've personally experienced being turned around at the border due to this "notion" so it's truth, as have others on here.  She has the visa, is likely going to be able to enter.  It's irrelevant at this point

She applied for a visitor visa not a work visa.

I just did.  I told you my personal experience with being denied.  It's usually at the officer's discretion but is indeed considered work.

10 years is the normal duration, some vary due to Reciprocity agreements.

As Transborderwife said, is it up to the officer's discretion, and it can be considered work,

Personally, my mother travelling on a tourist visa entered the US and told the border officer she was coming "for 3 months to help out since her granddaughter was just born"...the officer let her through with no issue.  That doesn't mean everyone will be allowed entry with this reason, though.  I suppose it would depend on variable factors.

That's what I was thinking.  But everybody always says "don't mention helping out" because it will doom you.  Seems it's up to the IO.  Luck of the draw as it usually is with tourist visas.

I think it mostly depends on the IO's mood plus the history of the traveller in question.

With my mother, she has crossed back and forth between the border several times and never overstayed..I'm certain that history was taken into account by the the person questioning her.  And as bad as it sounds, I'm sure her coming from Canada had a lot to do with it as well.

 

Someone who has never before had any type of visa entering the US, and from certain parts of the world, would probably face a bit more scrutiny.  Unfair, but that's how it works these days it seems.
