Problem because Changing Passport Number

Hi to all,

My passport is ready to expire and I'm still waiting for the ROC. (seems all the process take 10 or 11 months )

Every time I need a new passport they change all the numbers on it. 

I am waiting for the ROC and all the paperwork was done with the passport number that is ready to expire.

Do you see a potential problem here when I go for an interview (or maybe not) and all my documents in the green card are with my old passport number? Should I do something in USCIS when I receive my new passport?

I believe they dont care about your passport since the most important with immigration is you green card which more essential when entering the US. Just bring your old passport if in case they call you for interview.

When you renew your passport, do they return your old one? I know you have that option in Canada - they punch a hole in the expired one but do send it back to you. If that's allowed, then I think you should go ahead and get your passport renewed, have the old one returned and bring both, should you need an interview. That way, if it turns out you need an I551 stamp (depending on how long it takes), you can just get it in your new passport.

 

I don't think there's a way to update that information while they're "processing" (which is to say - while your application is sitting in a box in some storage room somewhere waiting to be taken to someone's office to be processed.)

There isn't even a requirement to maintain a current foreign passport when you have a GC, so it really is a non-issue renewing it at any point during the process

However, this question wasn't about travel - it was specifically about whether a new passport would affect an already underway ROC, which it won't.

Oh Im worry about the new passport because it took more than 6 months to renovate it from my consulate.  I am afraid because in all the papers on USA Green card petition when we send the copies of the passport etc etc will be the old passport numbers indeed.

My green card when I travel will be linked with the numbers of my old passport.

But you are right maybe I should travel with the old and the new one just to show them on the POE.

No need to sweat about this issue. First and foremost your green card is not linked to any passport you hold, any passport number and neither is the process of removing conditions tied to any of these as well. You were not even required to send a copy of your passport for the removal of conditions anyway. A green card on its own is sufficient enough for admission to the U.S. at any point of entry even without a passport in your pocession. That's why you can visit Canada and Mexico with only your green card and return to the U.S. A passport is mainly for air travel to the U.S. and overrides this when it when it has a visa or I-551 stamp inside. Keep your old passport in  safe place and travel with the new one together with your green card. You'll be fine. If it makes you feel better I've been travelling like this.

I don´t remember typing in my passport number in any of the ROC forms.
