Extension for K-2 Visa Possible???

Hello, is it possible to extend the expiration date of a K-2 visa? My wife's daughter is doing a follow-to-join K-2, she's still back home in Ecuador. She might not be ready to travel within the 6-month visa validity due to school issues. We are aware that we need to apply, (and obtain) the K-2 before the mom's K-1 expires, in other words within a year of K-1, however, she might need an extra month or 2 to actually travel to the U.S. I'm wondering if anyone has been in the same situation and how this was done. How much time before K-2 visa expiration you need to apply? Is a USCIS form and fees required for the extension request? Thanks.

You can contact the embassy and ask, but I'm reasonably certain they either won't or can't.

I needed to push my daughters' FtJ K2s as late as possible and the embassy only allowed their interview to be scheduled for the last possible interview day before the 1-year anniversary of my own visa.

 

What you might want to do is postpone the K1 visa interview - which IS possible, if it hasn't been done yet. That way, the 1 year FtJ gets pushed too and buys you a little time.

  The validity may not be 6 months as it will be 6 months from the medical not the interview.

Excellent point. This needs to be taken into consideration. We'll definitely schedule the interview as close as possible immediately after the medical exam.

Thanks for your reply. The K-1 interview was 8 months ago and we are getting ready to bring the "follow-to-join" K-2. We contacted the Consulate via email and are waiting for their reply as to what options we have. So your Embassy required you to schedule the (future) K-2 interview at the same time the K-1 was scheduled?

No, I was able to schedule the K2 interview when I was already in the US, via email. But I contacted them to see what the last possible date for their interview was, so as not to lose their Follow to Join status. Their interview ended up being just a few days before the 1-year anniversary of when my own visa was issued. 

 

That said, your embassy may grant your request, so contacting them was definitely a good idea. Just keep in mind that the 1 year validity is pretty standard.
