Married the love of my life last Monday, May 1st. <3 I should be able to get my marriage certificate in a week! I know this question will probably make me sound like a dumbass, but I just wanted to double-check: upon receiving my marriage certificate, I do the Adjustment of Status stuff FIRST before anything else (i.e., legally changing my name, etc.), right?

P.S. I'm on a K-1 visa and my 90 days are over on May 28

You change your name when you get married, if you're in California you add your new name at the bottom of the marriage license before you get married. When you get married that name change is legal and you can start using your new name.

The first thing you do when entering the US is getting your SSN, so I assume you did that already.

After marriage you file for AOS asap, preferably before your i-94 expires. Don't forget AP and EAD too.

K-1: 12-22-2015 - 09-07-2016

AP: 12-20-2016 - 04-07-2017

EAD: 01-18-2017 - 05-30-2017

AOS: 12-20-2016 - 07-26-2017

ROC: 04-22-2019 - 04-22-2020
Naturalization: 05-01-2020 - 03-16-2021

Tour marriage certificate is proof of your name change so all paperwork now should be with your new name.

You can can put your package together now while you wait for your certificate to come.
