He made a ruling from a US STATE, doing a job in which Sessions voted him in there to do. Words mean things, NB. Who knew?

I'd half expect him to imply that he misspoke or misremembered, but he's yet to imply that. And we wouldn't want to imply that he was a stupid man or intentionally trying to slight the people of a state, now would we? It'd be nice if we could call a comment in poor taste for what it is, instead of doing this dance.

Unbelievable; yet, true.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/20/us/politics/jeff-sessions-judge-hawaii-pacific-island.html

WASHINGTON — Attorney General Jeff Sessions spoke dismissively about the State of Hawaii while criticizing a Federal District Court ruling last month that blocked the Trump administration from carrying out its ban on travel from parts of the Muslim world.

“I really am amazed that a judge sitting on an island in the Pacific can issue an order that stops the president of the United States from what appears to be clearly his statutory and constitutional power,” Mr. Sessions said this week in an interview on “The Mark Levin Show,” a conservative talk radio program.

Mr. Sessions’s description of Hawaii, where the federal judge who issued the order, Derrick K. Watson, has his chambers, drew a rebuke from both of the United States senators who represent the state. Annexed as a territory of the United States in the late 19th century, Hawaii became the 50th state in 1959.

“Hawaii was built on the strength of diversity & immigrant experiences — including my own,” Senator Mazie Hirono, Democrat of Hawaii, wrote on Twitter. “Jeff Sessions’ comments are ignorant & dangerous.”

In Sessions' defense he did go to law school back when the Crown of England ruled the land. And anyway knowing how the system of government in the modern US works is irrelevant to the "best" people Trump has chosen for his Administration. Certainly it's irrelevant to being Trumps Attorney General.

Sessions is really just a lawyer from a former Spanish and British territory.

Sessions meant it in a derogatory way, as if the judge's place of ruling made a difference. Sessions is a known racist, and now he is also somewhat ignorant on the matters of US statehood, and even though he is from Alabama, he shouldn't get a pass.

Airline Employee: Welcome to Hilo.

Sessions: Excuse me?

AE: Welcome to H’waii senator. Aloha and welina.

Sessions: Thanks. I need to go to the Whykeekee Sheraton.

AE: I beg your pardon, sir?

Sessions: You heard me. How can I get to the Whykeekee Sheraton? I need to see a judge. He rules from this island. Isn't this island Huh-why-ee?

AE: Sir, you’re in Hilo. I believe you want the Waikiki Sheraton, but that’s in Honolulu.

Sessions: Now listen here you…. (puzzled)

AE: Yes

Sessions: Listen here you… (thinking} native person, I booked a ticket to Huh-why-ee. I done no bookin no tickit to Hone-Ole-Loo-Loo. Now, how do I get to the Sheraton.

AE: Senator, Honolulu is in the state of H’waii. It’s the capital city. But it’s in another island.

Sessions: Another island? State? Who done givin you people statehood?

AE: That was a long time ago sir.

Sessions: Evidently. I musta been busy takin care of other people back home, I missed it.

AE: I am afraid I do sir. Do you need help with your luggage?

Sessions: I need help to get me to Hone-Ole-Loo-Loo (slowly stretching each syllable)

AE: But sir, I told you Honolulu is in another island. There is a flight out in the morning. You’ll have to spend the night here, I'm afraid.

Sessions: It done make sense. I saw it in the map. This island IS Huh-why-ee.

AE: I see the confusion Sir. The state is called H’waii, and one of the islands is also called H’waii, but the seat of government is not in this island. It’s in O’ahu. That's where the judges are

Sessions: Gotta fahre that stupid assistant. She done book me to the wrong Huh-why-ee!

Yes, but he didn't issue the ruling from the island of H'waii. He issued it from the island of O'ahu.

There is an island called H'waii. That is not where Justice Walker is. (Strike 1)

There is a state called H'waii, and it's not one single island. (Strike 2)

Sessions double down and refuses to accept geography. (Strike 3).

What's so funny is no where did he ever say Hawaii   even though you have made 3 posts making fun of him for something he did not say.

Right. In his game there are 4 strikes. He is probably living in the late 19th century.... I'll give you points for trying.

Mr Sessions just hasn't learned the lingo, now if he had said some judge from a "so-called" island state in the Pacific somehow it would have been more acceptable, kinda like the over used term "so-called" President of the USA.

Just using "so-called" allows one to be in denial, surely we can forgive Mr Sessions for his blooper :jest:

You realise why people say "so-called" President right?

For me it wasn't the geography that i had a problem with. I have no doubt Sessions is intelligent. That makes it worse. He clearly knows Hawaii is a state, just like any other state. His use of the phrase, instead of just saying "a single judge from a single state" was done for a purpose.

I can't think of a reason to say it the way he did that wouldn't be intended to be insulting or demeaning.

I believe Trump used so called in a comment about a judge.

Of course, I agree 100% Mr Sessions knew exactly what he was doing. In the same way that some members repeatedly use the words "so-called president" know what they are doing, which I believe to be disrespectful.

The country is never going to settle until the Presidency is accepted by all.

They are being disrespectful to the President because he has a track record of being disrespectful to people he disagrees with.

I agree with you though that we need to "accept" that he is the President, but that doesn't mean we have to agree with him. If he wants to treat others disrespectfully, I don't feel guilty for treating him with disrespect.

As for Sessions - If he knew what he was doing, then he knew he was being intentionally disrespectful. It is similar to when/if people call him "Some hick lawyer from an old slave-owning state". Pointing out that the Judge is from an island in the pacific is trying to highlight the fact that they are "separated" from us, and attempts to imply that it is somehow important. It shouldn't be. Hawaii is a state just like any other state.
