Out of State ID - Citizenship Interview

Hi Everyone, 

 

I've seen a few threads on this, but haven't found anything too recent, so apologies if this has been answered. 

 

My husband has his citizenship interview coming up soon and while we've lived in Illinois (specifically Chicago) for almost 2 years, we haven't changed over our Indiana driver's licenses (yes, I know... we technically and legally should do that, but it's extremely common place not to, especially in Chicago). We have other documents showing we live at our current address in Chicago. 

 

Does anyone have any experience with this specifically?

You'll likely be asked to explain why you have an out of state ID.

 

It's generally not a great idea to go into an interview knowing you are breaking the law, however minor, whilst simultaneously asking for a benefit.

Yeah.... I'd go get new licenses before his interview. Why risk it?

We changed our DLs from IN to IL in the first month of moving knowing we'll be asked about it at my naturalization interview. 

Go change the DL now. And, new IL DLs are now good for air travel in the US (and access to federal buildings). Wasn't so before.

To show eligibility for interview in that state you will need state issued id - such as a photo id or driver's license. It goes hand in hand with the 90 day residency requirement in that district before applying for naturalization.

Also, did you update your addresses with USCIS using the AR-11 forms ?

 

 

  • sending I130 05/16/2007
  • cheque is cashed on 06/11/2007
  • NOA1 in mail 06/13/2007 (who said 13 is badluck )
  • 07/30/2007 After no touches and no other signs we just got an email with the APPROVAL of I130....Thank God !....now what ?

  • 08/07/2007 Case received by NVC and case number assigned :))

  • 08/13/2007 DS3032 and AOS bill were generated

  • 08/14/2007 Emailed choice of agent ...i'm so curious when they will accept it...hopefully soon

  • 08/21/2007 DS3032 and AOS fee bill arive in mail

  • 08/27/2007 paid AOS fee bill
  • 8/28/2007 DS3032 choice of agent accepted
  • 9/3/2007 IV fee bill generated

Got it! Thanks. Yes, we updated our address with USCIS when we moved, we just kept our old address as our mailing address because it's my parents' house where we lived with them for awhile after we first got married. (And we've had trouble with mail getting to our apartment in Chicago)

 

We moved to Chicago primarily for my husband's Master's program and have the intention of going back to Indiana once he finishes due to my mother's health issues. 

 

We're getting new IL IDs this week... It's been a long few years with lots going on and it just kind of fell off my radar for the interview...
