Sometimes you need the SSN to open a bank account or for medical assistance. In some states you need it to get the marriage license. I'm sure there's more reasons why

I just don't like surprises. In my experience, most surprises that don't come wrapped in a box usually suck...just saying.

A couple reasons I can think of. First, you'll need a SSN to claim your OH on your taxes. Filing as a married couple saves you a LOT of tax dollars. Second, if you have insurance through your employer you will need a SSN for your OH to get them on your plan. AoS takes a year. That's a long time to not get the official benefits of being married from not having an SSN.

Taxes! I was forgetting that important one, thank you for reminding me

 

As I see it, it's just a small formality that can save you a lot of headaches and helps you be well identified for whenever it's required. I think we'll be doing this before going to get the marriage license. Kind of a killing two birds with one stone thing for us.

I searched his I-94 history and he has none. He's from GB. Would he need the I-94 to apply for ssn? Or just passport.

It differs by state. Georgia allows you to get your drivers license after 30 days as a resident.

That is a question for the local DMV in your state.  I have looked and for Oregon, she can get her DL with some information.  Need to show that she lives here and have the K-1 or I-94 information.  You need to look at your specific state though.

Given that we're talking about SSN, does anyone know what the protocol is surrounding the SSN if your fiancee already has one? Do they keep the same one or will they need a new one. My fiancee had to got one when she was here on a J1 for college.

SSN are for life. She would keep the same number

The i94 is mandatory. He can get it online once he's in the country and it's an immediate thing.

Driving licenses are another tricky question. It varies depending on the state, but the general consensus is you can't have one until you get the EAD.

 

I'm not very informed on this topic, but apparently the one you get under the K1 expires when the i94 does.

 

So there are different scenarios depending on the state or even who you talk to at the DMV.
