I don't think trying to sell people things they don't necessarily need is a bad thing. Heck that's probably 70% of the world's economy.

It's also the reason many people would rather have a root canal than buy a car.

I said many people, and I used root canal because that's the expression people who don't want to deal with the tactics like to use.

Personally don't like buying cars or root canals myself.

I sell cars and I agree the process could use tweaking. However many times the customer makes it much harder than it has to be.  As for people buying stuff they don't need, I did not say didn't want.  Very few items sold in this country are Items people have to have, because in reality we need very little to survive .

Good points. I'd rather they just sell cars like anything else. It's not like people haggle over a lawn mower price at Lowe's, but then again the sales manager at Lowe's doesn't try to sell you rust proofing for the handle bars at the checkout either. Not usually anyway. The last time I bought a car, the sales guy apologized in advanced for having to send me back with the sales manager. That guy did not understand the meaning of no means no.

I agree most sales managers are a next level of failure to communicate. However  I think you are talking about the Finance manager. Those guys get paid on the interest rate you are charged and any products you buy like Gap, warranty , road Hazzard etc. If you buy a car and stroke a check and don't buy anything else , they make zero and it can actually make them make less overall.

Some of them try to hard, I admit.

I have done quite well because I was a consumer for 30 years, I am super laid back and even tell people.  I am not going to call and bother you, they appreciate that and usually come back and find me after they get surroundedby 5 people at the next place.

Yeah, that's the guy. Every time I said no his face got a little redder. I was getting a little concerned by the end because he didn't look too good. I guess I know why now.

This happens everywhere.  I finally broke down and bought a new phone.  For the actual phone purchase I prefer to go to a store, and in this case AT&T.  All the over-priced stuff they try to sell just leaves one frustrated.  So I should pay $40 for a screen protector that I can get for about $6 on Amazon?  I think not.  As to actual car buying, I usually go through an independent car broker that works through a local dealer.  The car is delivered to my house by some drivers (usually retired older persons), I sign the papers, and they leave.  Much much easier than a root canal.
