The fact that the letter says that it "extends your conditional resident status for one year" is not clear at all.

It could be "extends... for one year from the date of this letter" or "extends... for one year from the expiration date of your permanent resident card" - it would read the same. They made it vague and never bothered to fix it, it's on them.

From a personal standpoint, I got multiple different answers. CBP stamped my passport when I entered saying my extension was valid until one year after the date on the letter. A Tier 2 IO told me it was the green card date. An IO at an InfoPass agreed. Another, when I got my stamp, disagreed and said it was the letter.

Stop acting like you know the answer when even USCIS doesn't.

Agree with rshree.   Why you guys make everything so complicated.

Look above at Mollie9's response.  This is why we are confused.  If you can find on the USCIS site the exact explanation, please share it here.  No one yet has found it, but maybe you can since you seem so confident.  If there weren't so many contradictory response from government staff, we wouldn't have to question it.  That's why "we make everything so complicated"!

NC DMV took it to mean 1yr from date of green card expiry, i wasnt arguing.

However, at my infopass appt for a further extension, the stamp in my passport was dated 1 yr from the date of my infopass appt, NOT 1 yr added to my original extension or if you like 2yrs from green card expiry.

Go figure.....

I agree Mollie 09...

How many times have we written a text, letter or an email and having proof-read it, had to revise a sentence or two, because we realized that it could be left open to misinterpretation?

I learnt very early in my English Language and Literature classes that the English language at times can be vague and ambiguous, and has been the source of many disputes with respect to contracts, written statements, testimonies, etc.

After all, remember, "Let's eat grandma" has a very different meaning from "Let's eat, grandma" :)

We are all on this board to help each other out and my suggestion to us all is that if we can't respond to a poster without putting them down, it might be a good idea not to respond at all.

I applaud @neilsqueen.

Not even all the state DMVs agree- my husband's driver's license expires 1 year after letter date.  We're in NC as well (Raleigh).

I cannot understand the confusion.  What expired?  The conditional GC (I-555).  If you ask for an extension, what are you trying to extend?  Answer, the expiration date of the GC.  Therefore, who cannot understand such a simple statement?.  IT EXTENDS FOR ONE YEAR THE DATE OF THE EXPIRATION OF THE CONDITIONAL GC.

One bit of logic that impedes some DMVs from interpreting it that way is that those extension letters have the receipt date listed on them, but not the green card expiration date. So they look at the document and don't assume they have to apply the logic of a one-year extension to another document--the green card.

The truth is the wording of the letter is truly vague. It didn't matter in the past when RoC processing was faster, but now they really need to clarify. My DMV takes it to mean one year from the receipt date and after escalating the issue they reviewed and decided that they were correct.

It is true but it is mind boggling how USCIS cannot simply put the expiration date on the letter itself and end this confusion. They have the residency dates for all CPRs on file. Instead of writing "Your conditional resident status is extended for a period of one year" why can't they just write "Your conditional resident status is extended until March 22nd 2018"? A jr high student can code this in their system in about 10 minutes.

Or if this is so-hard, they can post an example case on their official webpage; show picture of a sample conditional green card; then write down for this specific example this person needs to apply for his/her I751 from this date to this date and his/her GC would be automatically extended for one year until this date. They could post an example for a waiver filer as well and that'd be it.

Nobody stated that the US bureaucracy is simple or even intelligent at times.  Nevertheless, with a little inspection, you will be able to deduce their meaning.

Also some of these forms are mass forms that apply to anybody.  If they actually wrote in your date, then it would be  a personal specific letter for you, something they don't want to do.  TOO MUCH WORK AND THOUGHT.

GXN.  When you go to the DMV you should bring your expired GC and then it becomes obvious.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately this involved a lot of escalation with them doing internal reviews. I agree on what it should be, but unfortunately there is no clarification from USCIS nor is there a universal adoption of a single interpretation from all the different DMVs in the nation. Absent either change, it seems like it will be inconsistently applied and we simply got the short end of the stick.

It's all very well folk here getting on their high horse giving their opinion on how it reads, that it couldn't be clearer, that there should be no confusion reading it, what it should be, what they think it should be or whatever.

They can post what they like here, the fact is opinion is not what counts, as can be seen from the actual real life experiences of some posters.
