Being offended doesn't work anymore. The key is discussion, and if you are unwilling to do that you are creating the very conditions in which Trump and people like him can thrive. You need to reengage with the  democratic process, figure out why your candidate lost, reshape your  entire message, and then fight like mad in 2018.

The answer to how he could possibly have won, was right there on the election map. Trump won because he over performed in rural and suburban counties and Hillary’s advantage in the cities just wasn’t enough to compensate. Maybe the people who live in those more rural  areas got tired of being belittled as a bunch of racist, sexist, homophobic, backward, Bible-banging basket of deplorables. How do you think people are going to vote if you speak to them that way? When has anyone ever been persuaded by being insulted or labeled ? 

The reason you didn’t recognize your own country  the night of the election is because the swath of the population that you’d relegated to the rubbish heap of American history was larger and angrier than you thought, and they decided they weren’t comfortable shoved down there anymore. So they got up, dusted themselves off, and headed to the polls to get your attention the only way they knew how. In their numbers.

Maybe if you’d allow conservative speakers on campus and stop entombing yourselves in insular safe spaces, you wouldn’t be so shocked to realize that many people reject your ideas. Yes, some of Trump’s supporters may be hateful, stupid, misogynistic white supremacists who aren’t worth arguing with, but you can’t spend the next four years viewing 60 million people as utterly irredeemable. Shaming them and shouting them down didn’t work. You’ll have to convince them. Your argument won't won by hurling labels and insults, or posting scurrilous memes on Facebook or other social media, or screaming and marching through  the streets wearing pink representations of female anatomy on your heads. You need to talk to people who think differently than you do and persuade them of your argument. Such an easy thing to do, but the left has lost the art. Stop thinking that everyone who disagrees with you is stupid, or evil, or sexist, or racist and talk to them.
