Well, let's see, I was detained at the Canadian border one time for over an hour with many many questions asked about my purpose for entering the country (business meeting).  Eventually, I was turned around as I had some tools in my back pack which they took as me doing actual hands on work and I did not have a work visa.  I always keep tools in my pack, and forgot to remove them prior to my trip at that point even though I have been back and forth to Canada at least 100 times.  The gall of the Canadian border officers for not believing me!

 

This story sounds more like a semi-famous person that expects to be given the royal treatment, and not getting it this time.  How can we expect to have a cultural society if we don't simply let in those self absorbed elites no questions asked.

    You didn't mention if they sat you in a room and insulted you for 2 hours while questioning. My feeling is they didn't, so your story is not exactly a parallel.

 

  For the last 20 years, I have gone 3 or 4 times a year to Canada. In my personal experience and by observation, Canadian customs and immigration in general are no where close to being the jerks that USCIS border agents can be. 

 

  So to me this doesn't sound like a 'famous' person expecting royal treatment, rather someone in a position to point out the abusive people actually working in these positions. There are plenty of stories like this out there, but the average person doesn't have the forum she does for bringing attention to what happened.

It sounds like an old lady who had never been in her life dragged into a room and asked aggressive prying questions of the nature I can only imagine we asked of her. Probably plenty of comments, accusations, who knows. Humiliated, embarrassed, frightened - the same thing would happen to any person that experienced it.

 

Here's another article that talks about a visa though. Not sure if it really was a visa or if it was the VWP.

Of course that viewpoint only applies if she is actually telling the truth.  My story may not be an exact parallel, but the fact remains, the CBP officers are not there to be your friend.

So a writer is an automatic intellectual?  Is this all writers, or just the "progressive" writers?  The reason my first reaction is to doubt her story is that she is by definition a self-promoter in order to sell her books and put money in her pocket (I.e. She has an ulterior motive to get her name in the news).  It is a lot like Hillary and her exciting stories about dodging bullets.  Along with that many of the "horror" stories we have heard lately regarding how Trump has impacted foreigners coming to the US have turned out to be false, or business as usual at the border.

  It seems your perfect world would have 'guilty until proven innocent' as one of it's tenets then? That falls under number 12 on the '14 points of fascism' list by the way.
